Deciding my current major was not an easy task for me— there is a side of me that loves chemistry and the beauty of science, but then there is also another side of me that desires to interact with people and understand the different cultures and societies that exist today. The majority of my GE courses involve the language and culture of Chinese, as that is a language I wish to minor in. One of the main reasons why I wish to minor in Chinese is because I want to be able to keep up with where my family is from– having the privilege of being an American citizen and a first generation child, I realize how important it is for me to be bilingual. In order to keep in touch with the majority of my family members, I need to be able to communicate with them in Cantonese. I find it disturbing to know that so many second and third generation students do not know how to speak the language of their parents or grandparents— I think it is extremely crucial to embrace one’s background, and to identify with it. Through the courses I am taking, I think that being well-rounded and eager to explore new ideas and topics is fruitful towards a successful career.
As an international business major, I find it crucial that I should be aware of where I am and who I am surrounded by. Everyone comes from a different background, and everyone has a different story to tell. It is a responsibility of mine to be open minded towards the perspective of others. Being globally aware of what goes on not only in the classroom, but in society as well, strikes me as an important factor that I plan to use for the rest of my life. Whether it is from a study abroad program or joining different cultural student organizations, learning and taking in different experiences can provide me with more opportunities and possible jobs.
Global awareness and academic enrichment both strike me as two equally important facets that make a person successful. In order to prosper in the future, I find that it is very important if a person is capable of listening to the perspective of others and coming a conclusion as to how a person came to that certain attitude. Additionally, I think that being very informed and educated can help a person develop cognitive skills that will help to flourish an individual’s opportunities. I will definitely try to utilize these two skills in my daily life, here at the Ohio State University— most importantly, I wish to be capable of applying these two abilities for the rest of my life.
