2017-2018 Year in Review

My academic experiences in my second-year at Ohio State have been broad and interdisciplinary. As a double major in Philosophy and Political Science, I have enriched my curriculum with courses in graduate coursework in logic, the philosophy of science, and independent research. In particular, I was able to participate in a graduate seminar in the philosophy of science. This was an incredibly challenging experience, and I got to learn more about graduate school in philosophy.

On campus, I had the pleasure of talking to incoming freshman at the Eminence Finalist Dinner.

I have also been able to learn more about the nonprofit industry through the Buckeye Undergraduate Consulting Club. Through a project with Make-A-Wish, I was able to apply the analytical and technical skills that I have developed in the classrooms.

Additionally, I have continued my involvement in Enlighten and I am interested in researching more about human trafficking. Enlighten can be found at https://www.facebook.com/enlighten.ht/.

This summer, I will be working at an anti-human trafficking nonprofit. I’m excited to use data analysis tools to develop innovative reports in the field of human trafficking. I included one data visualization I did for class. This shows the age distribution of human trafficking victims worldwide:

After graduation, I still plan to enroll in a joint JD/PhD program in law and philosophy. My interest in law lies with issues involving jurisprudence and human rights law. Primarily, I hope to bring attention to global issues involving human rights through academic scholarship and advocacy.

Finally, I have attended several concerts featuring some my favorite artists this year including: Japanese Breakfast, Mitski, Hello Emerson, and Milo. I look forward to next year!

2016-2017 Year in Review

It’s difficult to imagine that my freshman year at Ohio State is already coming to an end. Although I’ve only aged about eight months, I’ve gained many valuable skills and memories including: the ability to eyeball food purchases in exact multiples of $8, several personal best times in the race from Bradley to Scott Labs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, and an almost instantaneous response to O-H! More importantly, I have met amazing people at Ohio State and thy friendships are indeed very firm.

In the classroom, I’ve grown to love my major and I thank my professors in the philosophy department for welcoming me with enthusiasm. I appreciate the many discussions I have had with faculty and peers, and I’m excited to learn from these brilliant people next semester. This year, I pursued independent research in the philosophy of science, investigating the role model organisms play in our sciences. I will continue this project next semester, potentially developing this into an undergraduate thesis.

Through the Honors program at Ohio State, I was able to take a diverse number of courses from Anthropology to English. Now, I know how to tell an Australopithecus ramidus from a Homo erectus. But my experiences go beyond being able to remember fun facts, the Honors curriculum encouraged me to take courses outside of my comfort zone.

In the middle of the second semester, I decided I was still thirsty for that sweet academic ambrosia, and I declared a double major in political science. This was motivated by my involvement in organizations such as the Collegiate Council on World Affairs. Through trips to London with the Honors Program and Montreal for Model UN, I developed a strong interest for international affairs. This summer, I will be studying abroad in Morocco as part of a study abroad program organized by the Office of International Affairs. Just several years ago, I never would have expected future Henry to travel to Africa. But now, my comfort zone is happily crossing the Atlantic Ocean. I am thankful for the financial resources given to me by the Eminence Program in support of this opportunity. Right after Morocco, I will be traveling to Bristol, UK to participate in a Fulbright Summer Institute.

I look forward to my busy summer, and I am eager to see where the next three years take me. Go Bucks!

Reflection on G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I plan to work towards the goal of Global Awareness by taking courses that are related to global issues. I have studied abroad in Morocco, England, and hopefully more places to come. With programs through the Office of International Affairs, I have been able to explore different cultures and locations. I hope to continue studying abroad and travel to South America. Another way I am working towards Global Awareness is my interest in international affairs, which I will explore through courses from the political science department. One example is the comparative politics course I took, where I worked on a final project about political influences on healthcare systems around the world.

Original Inquiry: In high school, I did research in a lab setting that was mostly about the subject of biology. Now, I am interested in research in the political science and philosophy departments, which look very different from the research I had previously been involved in. I have worked on an independent research project in the philosophy of science and I placed first in an undergraduate three-minute thesis competition hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry. Additionally, I hope to more involved in research in political science.

Academic Enrichment: Academic enrichment is an important goal of mine, and I will achieve this by challenging myself with advanced classes. The philosophy department has many interesting classes that are graduate level, but I plan to challenge myself by taking those classes. I have taken several graduate courses in the philosophy department as well as participating in a graduate seminar (Philosophy 8650) on the philosophy of science. I also think it is important to spend time learning outside of the classroom, and I have attended philosophy colloquium series where well-known philosophers present their papers.

Leadership Development: I will strive to be a leader both in and outside the classroom. Leadership is related to service, and I hope to be a leader of a service organization on campus. I am also involved in various extracurriculars and organizations such as CCWA, Buckeye Leadership Fellows, and Enlighten, and I hope to take on leadership positions in the future. In particular, my involvement in BLF has been a great experience so far, and I look forward to working on my BLF Capstone.

Service Engagement: Service is an integral part of the undergraduate experience, and I believe that students should participate in service learning. As part of the Eminence Fellows, I am a part of Enlighten, an organization focused on raising awareness about human trafficking. Additionally, this summer I will be interning at an anti-human trafficking non-profit. In the future, I hope to continue to use my educational background to pursue service opportunities.
