About Me

I am Loryn Wright, and I am a first-year student at the Ohio State University, studying Animal Science. I grew up in Defiance, Ohio (about an hour south of Toledo) with my mom, dad, and sister, Haleigh (I’ve attached a photo of us, along with pictures of my friends and me). I have raised poultry to show at the county fair for the last six years through 4-H and FFA. My experiences in livestock production have led me to want to attend vet school to become a poultry or large animal veterinarian. I am an avid weightlifter, and I am on the Novice Women’s Rowing team here at OSU. I also enjoy traveling, knitting, the Cleveland Indians (see below), and Calculus. Coming to Ohio State, I chose to be a part of the Environment and Natural Resources Scholar Program because of my interest in agriculture and how important the connection between sustainable agriculture and the environment is. I am specifically focused on using my time here on understanding the proper processes that should be taken place in livestock production to minimize the global footprint the industry leaves (such as rangeland management, proper manure disposal or conversion, etc). I understand that many people find sustainability in ag to be simply be locally sourcing produce and products, but most family/local farms are contracted with bigger companies anyway. What I want to focus on is reforming the large scale, networked companies and finding new ways to make these companies themselves more sustainable, mainly through the way they transport goods and (in livestock production) dispose of animal waste. I love to participate in outdoor recreation, especially activities like kayaking, rock climbing, or hiking. I love activities that are fun in themselves but have a focus in nature as well. I hope to use the ENR Scholars program to better the OSU community and the agriculture industry as a whole, and to be able to bring back the ideas and concepts that I will learn back to my hometown. I also hope to become involved with the Poultry Science Club and Faith & Fitness here at Ohio State because both organizations fit my interests in poultry science, exercise, and faith. Go Bucks!
