GOALS

Global Awareness:

To achieve this goal, I plan on specializing in international relations within my political science degree. I believe that this coursework focus will broaden my perspective of the world and various people of it. Learning about other social and political structures can also help me better understand our own.

Original Inquiry:

I have taken an upper level research based class on Supreme Court decision making that help me build my research confidence and ability. I also plan on taking similarly research based honors classes in the political science department. The nature of my internship with Clean Fuels Ohio also encouraged original research.

Academic Enrichment:

I chose to add a major in Political Science during the spring of my freshman year in order to challenge myself and broaden my academic endeavors. By double majoring, I learn not just about the subject matter, but the opportunity to learn how to learn new topics. I have also added a minor in religious studies along this same thinking.

Leadership Development:

I am an active member of several organizations including Buckeye Broomball, Running Club, Alpha Phi Omega, and the Thomistic Institute. Through membership in these organizations, I have learned how to lead within a group of like minded peers, which is an essential skill in any career. I also hold executive board positions in both Buckeye Broomball and the Thomistic Institute where I directly lead my fellow members.

Service Engagement:

I spend much of my time every week serving my campus and community through Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Through this organization I have already served over 50 hours and I plan on growing that number. Service has broadened my perspective of the world and my community and I believe that that has helped my academic endeavors as well.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

To gain a greater global awareness while at the Ohio State University, I intend on taking part in a few different activities ranging from related coursework to study abroad opportunities. As a political science double major I will most likely be enrolled in at least one (and probably more) comparative government classes which will give me a better idea of how different countries operate and their various social philosophies on government and economics. I am also strongly considering a short study abroad, either one that is part of the Global May program following my sophomore year or an internship in the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa in the May and June after my sophomore year through a program in the political science department at OSU. Getting involved in activism related to foreign and global issue can also be beneficial to furthering myself in this category.

While a part of the Honors program at Ohio State, I hope to become involved in experiences of original inquiry. As a student at a major public research institution with the types of resources and opportunities that OSU has to offer, I would be a fool not to at least entertain the idea of taking part in undergraduate research. Whether that means helping with research in my two departments (economics and political science) or completing an honors thesis, I think this would be a great way to practice my research skills and potentially show law schools or future employers my work ethic. Also by taking upper division course work, I will be able to write research papers and similar assignments.

Obviously, the main reason I am attending Ohio State is for the academic enrichment that my education will give me. I hope to take a challenging and varied course load. In addition to the general education requirements, I will be pursuing a major in Economics and in Political Science as well as potentially a minor in public policy from the Glenn College of public affairs. These degree focuses, I hope, will prepare me well for law school and subsequently a career in law and/or the public sector. Beyond the practice value these majors and minor provide, classes in these areas will pique and develop my interests. By taking narrow focused and upper division coursework at Ohio State, I will be better prepared for the stresses of law school and a career in law in general.

In terms of leadership development while in college, I plan on continuing to take an active role in the clubs and organizations I’m involved in. With respect to formal leadership, I plan on running for an officer position in the OSU running club by my junior or senior year. In addition to this, I foresee myself founding a student organization that helps fight for social issues related to justice that I and others care about. In doing this, I would be able to grow myself as a leader and help others while making use of my economics and political science majors as well as my public affairs minor. This would also help me stand out in a pool of law school applicants (not that this would be the driving motivation, but it is certainly a perk.)

By giving back to my community through service, I would be able to grow both as a student and as a person by helping others with my time and effort. Like I mentioned in the previous paragraph, I can see myself starting (or at least joining) a student organization that focuses on an social justice issue that means something to me. In addition to this, I plan on getting involved in other service opportunities ranging from Buckeyethon to miscellaneous service projects through the Newman Center.

Career

Artifacts

A Dollar Bill- As an economics major, I have a growing interest in the value, use, and concept of money. As a general college student, I am dedicated to making my “dollar” count whether that be in tuition or living expenses outside the classroom.

About Me

My name is Will Wright and I am currently a first year student majoring in political science and economics at the Ohio State University main campus. I am from Jamestown, North Carolina and am excited to further my education in such a new and exciting environment. I hope to eventually translate these skills and knowledge to law school.
