Back from Vacation

I’m back from vacation now and excited to be back at The Salvation Army. Today is the only day I’ll be working this week and I’ll be working on flyers to hand out to Columbus Libraries. These flyers advertise our sign up document for Christmas assistance. I’ll also be scheduling people to ring bells at our red kettles and scheduling social media posts for the rest of the week.

Press Release

Today I drafted my first press release. This was pretty boring but it’s what the job entails!

Me and my supervisor collaborated and came up with the greatest possible verbiage to get donors to want to help us #RescueChristmas,  more information on this when the press release goes public on Thursday!

Speaking of Thursday, I will be taking a mini-vacation from THR (10/22)-MON(10/26), so I will be out of the office those days! I’m excited to go visit Colorado for the first time! And I’m getting great ideas from my supervisor on places to go and things to see. Her daughter lives near where I’ll be staying so we’ve been bonding over that these past couple weeks.

Day of Giving Phone Bank

Last week was a busy one for me. It started off with me trying on the Salvation Army mascot costume, “Sargent Sal”, which was much too large for me. I wasn’t too upset about not being able to wear the costume for our event. Speaking of the event, we hosted our Need Knows No Season Day of Giving on the 15th! This event was awesome, even though I worked extended hours that day. The fast pace of everything made the day go by quick.  Anyways, the event was a phone bank, where we raised money for those effected by COVID& people who are generally in need. I didn’t get to be Sargent Sal but I got to help with this event by running the Facebook Live, keeping track of our donations and updating our “funds-thermometer”,  I also did a bunch of miscellaneous tasks and even got the chance to answer the phone to collect donations when the lines were full. It was nice talking to the friendly donors, but some weren’t so pleasant as our reception weakened the busier the phone line got. Despite the few complications, this event was great and I’m glad I got to be apart of it. My supervisors even ordered Donatos and got us ice cream!

First Week of October

I’m a busy intern as we go into October. I’ve started a new project related to the Salvation Army’s “Angel Tree” initiative. I’ve been entering the names of children who will be gifted presents and a Christmas meal onto paper ornaments. These ornaments are given to donors to place on our Angel Tree’s this holiday season. I think this is a great program we run and it’ll be great to see the families helped this Christmas. Photo featuring: My huge stack of newspapers that I have to skim through and look for any mention of our Salvation Army name!

A Week of Work

Last week was pretty exciting for me! I started making social media posts for our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We have a specific model we follow when posting so it was interesting to learn. I also participated in my first meeting with other Salvation Army employees and partners. Everyone was very kind and knowledgable, it was a meeting through Zoom but it was still great to meet everybody! I also found out there is another person interning with us, but I’ll unfortunately probably never get to meet them, due to COVID safety guidelines.

First Day

My first day on the job was great. I was greeted by a nice secretary and a thermometer to check my temperature. I got a warm welcome from everyone in the office as my internship coordinator introduced me and gave me a tour.

When we got to my office I was pleasantly surprised to see my nice, spacious office space. After the tour I got to work, learning all about our social media feeds, skimming through newspapers, and learning new technologies that I’ll be using to create schedules.

Skimming newspapers gets boring, and is known to be the most tedious intern task, but I think with light music in my headphones, I’ll manage. Besides that, I’m really excited to work with the Salvation Army this semester.
