My high school diploma is not only a representation of my accomplishment of graduating from high school, but also a constant reminder of my newfound responsibilities as a student, a scholar, and a man. Graduation symbolizes independence, maturity, and responsibility. As a high school student, many things were out of my control and it was easy to attribute mistakes or shortcomings on others. As a college student, everything is a reflection of you- success and failure. The diploma illustrates past success as well as future challenges and aspirations. I plan to graduate from college in four years, attend a post secondary school, and attain a career in the medical profession.

About Me

I come from a middle class background and I believe it is my duty to give back to my community in the same ways it has given back to me. I will achieve this through education and service. I chose to join the Biological Sciences Scholars in order to structure my service opportunities and to connect to a wide array of intellectuals with the hopes of collaborating with them in both education and service.

My GOALS 2016

Global Awareness- Developing an understanding of what it means to be a citizen in the world on a global scale and how are cultures and experiences contribute to global diversity. I will participate in a club which celebrates diversity and global partnership.

My first semester at Ohio State, I was involved in the Morrill Scholars Program which is an organization within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion which believes in spreading ideas of diversity and promoting a student body with multiple perspective, points of views, and experiences that differ from one another with the hope of creating a more tolerable and educated world.

Original Inquiry- learning how to properly research a topic and how to properly ascertain important information which will further your creative thinking. In order to engage in this, I plan on doing research at Stone lab during my tenure at The Ohio State University.

Academic Enrichment- Pursuit of academic excellence inside and out of the classroom. The display of a desire and a passion to learn for yourself rather than learning based off a stiff curriculum plan. I will engage in this by participating in tutoring opportunities.

Leadership Development- Learn and adapt leadership skills in order to effectively lead in the classroom, the workforce, or any service or extracurricular opportunities. I will get involved in this by participating in clubs on campus and applying for leadership opportunities within the organization.

Service Engagement- Involvement in continued service throughout college career and exposure to different forms of service and how they benefit the community. I will become involved in numerous organizations and go beyond my minimal requirements of service hours.

The most important goals I would like to develop are Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. A strong gpa, continued involvement in community service organizations, and leadership positions in extracurricular clubs will display my commitment to these goals. I chose to be a Biological Sciences Scholar in order to set myself apart from the other 60000 students which attend The Ohio State University; additionally, my previous research of percentages of students who are admitted to medical school led me to ascertain that simply graduating from a 4 year university is no longer enough. I also believe this distinction will add to my resume for graduate school application outside of medical school. Another reason is my interest and roots in science; my grandfather was a university chemistry professor and my mother is a chemist. My strong mathematics skill enable me to excel in science and my interest fuels my desire to learn. To be a successful scholar, one must be detail oriented, charitable, driven, and cooperative. A strong leader is not someone who does everything right the first time, a leader must have first hand experiences with failure in order to effectively teach others how to deal with their failures after they themselves have experienced this. Similarly, a leader must maintain effective means of communicating and working with their peers in order to accomplish their goals. I plan to carry out my vision as a successful scholar student by applying myself fully to every task which is assigned to me, perform my responsibilities to the community as a participant in service, and to work with my fellow students to maintain a healthy competitive atmosphere for The Ohio State University. In order to fulfill this vision I will need the help of my professors, advisor, family, and friends.

From this scholars event I learned the value of teamwork and cooperation. Many times, we feel as though we can do anything we put our minds to. While this statement may have some truth to it, the entire truth is rarely made plain. In order to accomplish certain tasks, teamwork is necessary. This football game illustrated the idea that no one can do everything alone, and sometimes, a team of motivated individuals with a common goal and perseverance is all it takes to make a dream become a reality.
