Year in Review

This past year I have grown tremendously as not only a student, but also as a person. Living on my own has significantly increased my maturity level because I was forced to be more independent and rely on myself when things needed to get done. My first semester of college didn’t go as well as I was hoping it would go and I learned a lot from that. With my first semester experiences, I learned a lot about time management and studying habits. I was never a really good studier in high school and I relied a lot on my own knowledge when test taking. However, that did not work as well as it did in college as it did in high school. Chemistry was my most challenging class and I’ve learned how to actively study throughout the semester rather than waiting until the night before the exam. That has made me into a better student. I’ve also learned how to use the resources available to me much more often. I took note on the struggles I faced first semester and focused on doing better the second and I definitely achieved that and my GPA can prove it. Being a part of the Health Science Scholars program definitely was beneficial to my first year in college because it allowed me to meet my best friends and because we are in the same program, we take some of the same classes and were able to help each other out. All of the opportunities that the scholars program provided such as guest speakers, tutoring sessions, and professional development events helped me grow as a student and a future health care provider. I feel much more informed about the field I am going into thanks to this program. I enjoyed volunteering at the homeless shelter because it made me feel like I was making a difference  and it helped me become a more well-rounded person. I have looked into some research opportunities and am getting closer to finding something I am passionate about. Overall, I had a great first year here at Ohio State and am looking forward to the summer and my volunteer time at a hospital.

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. Global Awareness: I have completed the courses Art & Music since 1945, Dance in Popular Culture, Introductory Comparative Politics, and Holocaust German Lit & Film. These courses have broaden my knowledge of various cultures around the world whether it has to do with art, music, dancing, or politics. My education has been enriched by these courses because I have gotten a chance to learn about various aspects of culture all around the world. I have learned about dances that are specific to different cultures/areas of the world. I have learned which type of music and artwork originates from where. Have learned about how politics work here in America and in other nations. I have also learned about the upsetting history of the Holocaust and the damage that was done.

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

Leadership Development: I am in Pre-PT/OT Club here at OSU and was selected to be on the executive board as the Fundraiser Chair. This is one of my first leadership positions and I am so excited to deepen my leadership skills and learn from this opportunity starting in the fall of 2019. I was also selected to be a TA for one of my major courses – Family Science course. This is another exciting leadership role for me because I absolutely loved the course work from this class and did very well. I will have roles that I have never had before such as coming up with course content, grading assignments, and coming up with quiz questions. Both of these roles will help me develop leadership skills that will be important when it comes time to apply to grad school.

Academic Enrichment: I sat down on in interview with my RA and he spoke about his experiences being a pre-med student. Some of the main takeaways from the interview were the classes that he found challenging and his preparation for the MCAT. Physiology I heard is an extremely tough class and to do well you must dedicate time each day to studying the material and you need to really understand it to do well on the tests. Aaron, my RA is graduating early so he had to take 18 challenging credit hours on top of studying for the MCAT which sounds pretty close to impossible so I give him a lot of credit. I will not be graduating in three years so I can space my classes out more and I will also be taking classes over the summer. Instead of studying for the MCAT I will be studying for the GRE because I am hoping to become an Occupational therapist in the future. Aaron took MCAT prep classes and in his experiences, he has not found them to be extraordinarily helpful. From this interview I learned that I must buckle down and really focus on school because I am a future health care professional and the classes and preparation for that is not easy.

Service Engagement: This year I did a variety of services throughout the community. My main service act was volunteering at the Columbus Community Shelter Board. I spent my hours here cleaning kitchens and dining halls and serving homeless people food. I volunteered here for a while back in high school and I continued in college because I enjoyed doing this. I also participated in MLK Day of Service here at OSU. I was sent to Cosi and helped packed medical kits for students and it was a rewarding experience that I will definitely do next year as well. I was also a swim-timer at an OSU swimming event which was pretty cool to watch and an easy way to get some hours.
