Artifacts: Mentor Interview with Trey Hammond

As a first year PSL scholars student, I have the opportunity and honor to interview Trey Hammond, a second year PSLer majoring in Political Science and French on the pre-law track. He wants to become a lawyer and is a big fan of President John F. Kennedy.  Besides being involved in PSL as a mentor, Trey is involved in Phi Gamma Delta in Greek Life, Student Alumni Council, the Boo Radley Society, University Conduct Board, Committee on academic misconduct, and Food Recovery network. Trey especially enjoys being a part of Phi Gamma Delta as he believes in the idea of brotherhood and how his brothers pushed him to the best of his potential in all areas of life, especially academically. Through his participation in these organizations, Trey was able to build numerous connections with other people while serving the Ohio State community. For example, Trey was able to connect students from the past, present, and future through the Student Alumni Council. As a member of PSL, Trey is passionate about several topics in politics, including climate change and prison reform. He recognizes and understands the consequences of global warming for the environment and strives to protect the planet all of us call home. In light of the recent protests in the summer, Trey also recognizes the urgency for prison reform and for Americans to all come together for a constructive dialogue. In the end, Trey is certain about one thing. It is that he was lucky to be able to meet a lot of people with a strong passion in serving the society through Politics, Society, and Law scholars program and he thanks Mr. Freeman for his wonderful leadership and advising in the program.

G.O.A.L.S.

Honors and Scholars G.O.A.L.S.:

  • Global Awareness:

During my freshman year at the Ohio State University, I plan to advance my global awareness by becoming involved with various ethnic organizations that would provide me insights about their different cultures while learning about my own culture through my involvement in the Hong Kong Student Association and the APIDA community. In the future, I hope that I would have the ability to travel abroad to Spain or participate in the Ohio State/Oxford Pre-law exchange program to have a more in depth understanding of my future career and a worldly perspective.

  • Original Inquiry:

In my four years at the Ohio State University, I hope to participate in various research and internships in Political Science or Psychology to become actively engaged in interesting subjects outside of the classroom. During my freshman year, I may not have the ability to find research opportunities as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions, but I would start using extra time outside of my classes to explore my interests in a variety of subjects to prepare myself potentially for internships/research for years to come. I am interested in the Columbus internship program as well as the Washington D.C internship program. I hope that the COVID-19 restrictions would ease by 2021, allowing some in person internships and classes in the spring.

  • Academic Enrichment:

I chose to study Political Science because it would allow me to have a better understanding of the way government works and provide me the option of working in the government when I retired from being in a lawyer later in my life. In the first semester of my freshman year, I am taking American Foreign Policy to start working toward my major, Energy Transformation and Development for my admission into the Honors Program, Statistics 1450 to potentially declare a second major in Psychology, and Spanish 1103 for a potential Spanish minor in addition to my scholars seminar. I want to use my knowledge in psychology and political science to analyze the ways in which human behaviors and motivations affect policy making. I also want to be able to use psychology to better persuade the jury when presenting my cases in court in the future. I believe that in order to understand political and criminal systems in society, I must be able to understand human behaviors as systems are built and strengthened by people.

Leadership Development:

I am a member of the Politics, Society, and Law scholars program. I hope that I would be able to be a part of the executive board of PSL along with other organizations that I may come across in the future.

  • Service Engagement:

As a first year PSL scholar member, I am required to complete one hour of service each semester. I am committed to serve the Columbus community through a variety of service, political or nonpolitical. Grounded in an enriching Catholic education prior to attending OSU, I understood the importance of service and being a “servant leader” in the community. When given the opportunity, I would not hesitate in helping others in need and be a contributing member of society.

About Me

Andrew (Pierre) Ka Yiu Wong is a first year Political Science major on the pre-law track student at the Ohio State University. He is a member of Politics, Society, and Law Scholars and he aspires to join the Honors program in the spring. He is passionate about learning the different types of laws in the United States, attitudes and motivations of individuals under different circumstances, the effects of Groupthink, and exploring different cultures through the acquisition of foreign languages. During his time in high school, Andrew has participated in numerous extracurricular activities, including Student Council, Eagle Ambassadors, Mock Trial, JCOWA, and Quiz Bowl. He also is a member of the National Honors Society and led his school’s freshman retreat. As a devout Catholic, Andrew dedicated himself to service through volunteering at sites such as El Puente educational center, St. Peter’s Food Pantry, and tutoring at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic School. For his senior capstone project (Mentoring Youth in Poverty Through Education), which his group received a certificate of outstanding achievement, Andrew’s group explored the topic of education gap between the average American child and the American children, mostly people of color, living in urban, impoverished areas in the city of Dayton, OH. Deducing from his research, Andrew strongly believed that more resources can be allocated to public schools, including funding and reading materials. In fact, his group was able to collect hundreds of books to St. Benedict the Moor Catholic School through a book drive during Catholic Schools Week, just two weeks before the pandemic hits the U.S. As a freshman at the Ohio State University, he plans to be involved with organizations such as College Republicans and Mock Trial and hopes to learn more about his ethnic background through getting to know more about the APIDA community at OSU. He also hopes to go to a prestigious law school after he received his diploma and either work as a public defender or a prosecutor in a major city in the near future. Inspired by former president Abraham Lincoln, Andrew is certain that the best way to predict the future is to create it.
