Year in Review

Spring 2017-2018

This year I have started to see some of the involvement I had aspired for as an incoming freshman finally manifest itself. I have found myself participating in research, service, and organization involvement. I’m so glad to have finally pursued these experiences.

I’m most proud to have completed my first research project at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute in the Neuroscience department during the summer of 2017. As a part of this experience, I was able to give my first oral and poster presentations on my project: Mechanisms of Subpial Cortical Demyelination. This project primarily used immunohistochemistry on human brain tissue and microscope imaging to determine if patterns seen in brain lesions of patients with Multiple Sclerosis supports the postulation that a meninges derived immune cells are responsible for demyelinating lesions in these patients. I am also very excited to engage in more research involvement at the Wexner Medical center this upcoming summer, more updates to follow!

Another serendipitous moment was running into Universal Health Aid: Columbus at the Autumn 2017 involvement fair. UHA Columbus is the Columbus based branch of the non-profit organization Universal Health Aid. We work to ensure a healthier Columbus community through health education, free screenings, and preventive medicine. Through UHAC, I have been offered service opportunities and a smaller community within OSU. I’m thrilled to announce that I was recently selected for a leadership position within the organization, Chief of University Events. I will head a committee that is responsible for the activities that the organization hosts within the campus community. I’m sure this will be a fun and fulfilling opportunity.

I have finished most of my pre-requisite courses, including the infamous and foreboding Organic Chemistry! I’m really excited to get into some of my major courses and am really hoping that I will find some academic success within these courses. I will be preparing for the MCAT this time next year, which is incredibly exciting and also a little scary, so wish me luck!

Here is to another year! Cheers!

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I plan to encompass global awareness by studying abroad and using the opportunity of being in another country to try to understand and experience a culture that is different from my own.

Original Inquiry: I hope to become involved with research, perhaps at the Wexner Medical Center, to spark my discovery and involvement with the medical world.

Academic Enrichment: I will accomplish academic enrichment by taking honors courses to broaden my experience in the subjects I’m studying. I also hope to pursue research to extend my study to real-world applications.

Leadership Involvement: I hope to obtain leadership positions in the extracurriculars I intend to pursue. Ones I am particularly interested in are MedLife (of which I am already a member) as well as the sororities in the Greek system.

Service Engagement: I would like to capture service engagement by joining a service based extracurricular such as MedLife, as aforementioned, which provides a mobile clinic to low-income areas allowing me to see and serve the world around me.
