Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

To expand my Global Awareness while in the Honors program, I plan to spend a summer or semester abroad. I have looked into studying in Copenhagen, Denmark the summer after my second year, or the first semester of my third year. This will provide me with the experience to visit a whole new continent, when as of now I have never been outside of the country. Traveling through Denmark, and other parts of Europe would provide me with new views on the world which I would not be able to get anywhere else if I stayed on campus my whole duration of my college career. While there, I anticipate on taking courses that count towards my electives. Other than gaining academic credit while there (or in a different country if I were to decide a different program was a better fit for me), I will be able to have a more worldly view and step out of my comfort zone to expand my cultural horizons.

To work towards my Original Inquiry, I am considering completely research throughout my time at Ohio State and will be taking advanced course work in my major. From this, I will better expand my academic understanding in biology, my major. By completing research, I will be able to see if specific areas of my major (or another related topic) interest me. This will help me in determining what I want to do with my future career and the direction in which I want to take to reach that goal.

My Academic Enrichment will be met through my completion of my Academic Plan and my Honors Contract. I am very excited to continue my college career as a biology major. I have hopes to going to medical school and becoming a doctor. With a Spanish minor, I am hoping to become more rounded and be able to use the Spanish I learned when I come in contact with individuals who are unable to speak English and who are in need of medical attention. I am most excited about the Abnormal Psychology class that I plan to take as one of my GEs. It will help me when I have to take the MCAT, and hopefully expand my interests from just biology to social sciences. By selecting GEs that interest me, but are not related to my major show my desire to expand my knowledge and become a well rounded individual when I finish my time at Ohio State.

I hope to gain Leadership Development through clubs I am currently in. I am very interested in topics such as dogs and civil justice, and hope that through the clubs I am in currently, I can be an active member of the clubs. Through this active participation, I hope to gain leadership positions and help lead a group who is passionate about the same things as I am. I also noticed that there was no club designated to the hit TV show Game of Thrones. I hope and plan to start my own club here at Ohio State that will let me share my passion for the television show with other fans. With creating my own club, along with a few others, I would be able to exponentially grow what I know about leading others.

I am currently involved in volunteering at various races around Columbus, as I myself am a runner and love being able to contribute to the running community by volunteering at races. I also plan to participate in BuckeyeThon, raising money for pediatric cancer. This summer, when I return home I plan to pack lunches for students who don’t have access to meals on a regular basis when school is out. I hope that I can take a service trip through groups such as Buck-I-Serve, to be able to go abroad and have an amazing experience helping those who are less fortunate.
