Writing and Revision: Implementation and Differentiation

Overview

A group of children have created introduction videos of themselves. They have described their age, grade, and some of their interests. You will choose one of these students, and develop a 15-minute instructional activity, using strategies covered during the semester (curriculum-based assessment, lesson plan, differentiation, language/literacy, etc.). This week’s assignment has two components: the instructional activity and peer review workshop.

What to do: Review the instructions for this week’s assignment.

Directions for the Instructional Activity

View all of the student intro videos listed below and select a student for whom you would like to create an instructional activity:

After you have selected a child, you will develop a 15-minute instructional activity, using strategies covered during the semester (curriculum-based assessment, lesson plan, differentiation, language/literacy, etc.). Make sure you watch the video from your child carefully and take into consideration their interests, age range, and instructional needs.

Respond to the items below. Your response can be as creative as you’d like. It can be in the form of a paper, a Prezi presentation, or other format of your choice. Just be sure to respond in detail to each item.

  • Create an engaging, interactive learning activity for the student you selected.  Describe, in detail, your implementation idea.
    1. What will you teach your student?
    2. How will you teach it?
    3. Describe the activity that you will present, and what the student will have to do.
    4. Create all components that would need to be included with your activity and attach to your assignment submission (any materials used for instruction, or samples of student responses, etc.)
    5. Create a scoring rubric.
  • Post the first draft of your instructional activity in this discussion board for peer review by Wednesday at 11:59pm.  Make sure you also include the name of your child in the subject line.

Directions for the Peer Review Workshop

  • After posting the first draft of your instructional activity to the discussion board, you will review and provide constructive feedback for TWO proposed activities written by your peers.
  • For this part of the assignment, please select and provide feedback only for activities written for two different children other than your own. Do NOT seek out other instructional activities that were produced for the child you have chosen.
  • In a 2-3 paragraph response, produce a piece of critical feedback that does the following:
    • Identifies something you really like
    • Provides feedback that could potentially enhance this activity for students and help make it better
    • Offers suggestions and recommendations for future revision
  •  All peer feedback is due on Friday at 11:59pm.

Considerations

  • This assignment is worth 20 points.
  • Your implementation activity will need to last 10-15 minutes.
  • You may NOT reuse an assignment you already turned in (e.g., preschool CBA, preschool lesson plan) but should create a new one.
  • You can visit a Columbus Metropolitan Library to check out materialsappropriate for the age group you are interested in. Librarians are friendly people who would be more than willing to help you find age-appropriate materials/topicsand library cards are free! The branches closest to campus are the Northside branch (1423 N. High Street; just north of Kroger) and at the Schoenbaum Family Center (lab school -175 E. 7th Avenue).
  • Please remain kind, courteous, and civil—even when providing critical feedback.

Overview

For this assignment, you will produce two differentiated instructional activities based on the lesson plan you submitted last week. Synthesize and use all of the strategies covered during the semester (curriculum-based assessment, lesson plan, differentiation, language/literacy, etc.). This week’s assignment has two components: the differentiated activities and peer review workshop.

What to do: Review the instructions for this week’s assignment.

Directions for the Instructional Activity

Using the instructional activity you created last week, produce TWO differentiated activities for your chosen student. For this activity, you will be asked to revise, adapt, and differentiate the lesson plan you submitted last week.

  • Let’s imagine your implementation activity / instructional lesson is too difficult for your student. Differentiate your lesson to make the lesson a little easier:
    • What will you do differently in general?
    • What specific changes (at least 3) would you make to make the lesson easier (you can include different prompts, questions, etc.)?
    • How will you change how the student is expected to respond, to make the response easier?
