Hello, my name is Sydney Willey. Welcome to my Honors & Scholars ePortfolio. Here I will document my experiences during college and my goals for the future. It is an opportunity to showcase my growth throughout higher education.
The Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S. are the important skills that each student should embody.
G stands for Global Awareness. This includes an appreciation and understanding of diversity. As a Spanish minor, global awareness is extremely important to me. I love learning about the culture and language of different countries. My goal is to study abroad to a Spanish speaking country to experience the culture first-hand and to further practice my Spanish speaking skills. I also hope to visit the UK this May to learn about music from the 60’s and its impact on history to further expand my global awareness.
O stands for Original Inquiry. This involves the research and innovation. My high school helped me build a solid understanding of the research and design process, and sparked my interest in research. I performed a small research project as a part of my biology class. We investigated the antimicrobial acitivity of a few household spices. I am in the process of joining a research lab while in college to further grow my skills, and give me an idea of the life of a researcher. I hope to potentially pursue a career in medical research.
A stands for Academic Enrichment. This means pursuing a rigorous curriculum, and academic experiences both in and out of the classroom. I am choosing to minor in Spanish and am on the pre-med track because I enjoy pushing myself and always want to learn as much as I can. In addition to challenging myself in the classroom, I have attended TED talk events, toured behind the scenes at the Columbus zoo, and visited the OSU planetarium. I have also attended events about topics from linguistics to physics, and many more. I love learning about new ideas and enhancing my knowledge from the classroom.
L stands for Leadership Development. This means not just participating in class and extracurricular activites, but rather developing a leadership role and taking on responsibilities. This year, I am taking on the role of sustainability chair in the OSU chapter of Blueprints for Pangaea. I work with other executive board members to get our organization up and running. I also work to ensure projects and events are run efficiently and sustainably.
S stands for Service Engagement. This involves taking time to give back to the community and serving others. I am passionate about spending time helping others. I am currently a volunteer ambassador at the Wexner Medical Center. I help escort patients and visitors, who are lost, to various locations throughout the medical center. In addition, I am the sustainability chair of a student group called Blueprints for Pangaea. The group’s mission is to collect unused medical supplies that would be thrown out and send them to countries over seas who are in need.
In this section, I will document experiences that have helped me gain valuable skills for my future career.

This is a picture of the outside of the high school I graduated from, The Marysville Early College High School. The robot sitting outside represents the dedication that our school had to science and innovation. The design process was extremely important in our school. The first few days of school were not dedicated to classes, but rather design challenges to get us to think outside the box. Many projects and assignments were designed to apply knowledge rather than just memorize it. It built a great foundation for me for college. I discovered that I enjoy solving problems and thinking outside the box. These skills will be very useful for me as I begin to look for research opportunities.
