Year in Review
Being at Ohio State makes me realize why I came here in the first place: I knew that I’d be driven to take a few steps into unknown territory and put myself out there to get to know other buckeyes. My first year didn’t go as I planned, but honestly I’ve learned a lot from it. Going from such a comfortable high school into a completely new college with endless knowledge requires a strong gut and a willingness to learn by doing. For my freshman year, I put myself out there to meet people in different organizations, gathered the information on resources, and learned a thing or two about relationships with others. My main purpose of being at the university hasn’t changed, but a few of my goals have for the better. Being able to say that I’ve learned more at OSU than what I could have learned at my high school is really assuring because it allows me to adjust to how things truly are the real world and opens me up to new opportunities in the future that might look difficult to start with, but that I know that I can get through and succeed.
I was able to meet so many kind people and learn new ways to study for my classes. Math was pretty hard, but I’ve been able to understand how to prepare for the lecture and get through the exams. My chem and engineering classes really interested me, but taught me that looking over material and understanding it to my best ability is necessary to succeed in the course. Aside from classes, the people I’ve gotten to know from my clubs and MSP and HES scholars group have been so funny, sweet, and nice to hang out with. Truly during club meetings and the MSP community service trip I was able to feel like myself and talk to people the way I would with my best friends. That was the warmest feeling in my heart because I knew that I’d be able to find my way at OSU through such gathering.
During Autumn 2019 my goals were to make friends, try new clubs, and try my best in my classes. Although these still are goals that I carry toward my sophomore year, new goals of managing the limits on studying and preparing for exams, getting into more leadership roles, and making more connections with my professors are also being carried into the year. Over the summer I plan to take 1220 chem at Columbus State so I can be able to apply for my major in Autumn and get in during the spring. Over all this year has been a hoot and a holler that I had o clue was coming. Thanks to my optimistic self, I pushed through, learned that better things are to come in the future, and that I know how to get the best time out of my experience at OSU. Starting a new in Autumn will allow me to help other through their time and take a new look at my goals with experienced eyes, which should make the way I pursue them more attainable.

Fox In The Snow with HES Peer Mentor Group
For an exploring Columbus Assignment, me and my HES peer group decided to head out to Fox in the Snow at 9 in the morning on October 6th. We all knew that we want to get to know each other and explore the great food in Columbus so we went with a pastry shop. I truly believe that we got to know more about one another’s goals and plans for college and by opening up about ourselves, I was able to get some key advice from my Peer leader, a chemical engineering student, about what classes I should for the upcoming semesters as well as what professors were helpful to have. With great advice, a beautiful scenery, and tasteful food, I didn’t mind waking up early and definitely would love to go out with them again to get an update on what the others in my group have been doing as we power through engineering together! I would recommend Fox In The Snow to those who would like a natural humble atmosphere to hang out, study, or do homework in. Glad to have gotten to know a little bit more about the places here in Columbus!

Color Guard
Although color guard isn’t the most widely-known sport, it definitely has impacted my life and has taught me many life lessons. My description of a color guard would be those who convey the theme of a marching band show visually through the various expressions, movements, and use of props. I have learned what it takes for a team of people to work towards a common goal, how motivation plays into a performance, and how ones performance is not the end all be all, but the complete opposite: a learning experience to carry onto a new goal/skill to reach. Not only have I been able to make unforgettable memories and friends through the sport, but have been able to find confidence in who I am and who I want to be as a person contributing to society everyday.
Friends
Socializing is my all time favorite thing to do when I have free time. I love meeting new people, watching TV shows, and other things that bring me into a conversation that society is having. The variety of topics and views interest me and learning about why people act or react a certain way towards things makes me even more curious as to what led them to think in such a way. Conversations constantly change and being able to be a part of many is one way that I can be culturally aware of people and invested in cultivating an environment that enjoys the idea of getting to know each other!
Yin and Yang – Motto “All is well”
I tend to think about the positives of situations which makes me smile a bunch! Growing up in a school with so many different interests, nationalities, and beliefs, I have learned that no matter what, believe in the good in the world and help when you can to those who would like it. With all the dilemmas in the world, the next best thing you can do is help out when you can and learn a thing or two about how you could possibly impact the world, one person or action at a time. My motto of “all is well” has all of what I believe is necessary for pushing on and being persistence in my efforts of setting my heart to do anything that I desire. As long as I believe in myself and bring others up with me when I can, I know I will live what I would consider to be my best life.

Hello! My name is Yasmine Wilford and the major that I came to OSU for is Chemical Engineering. I graduated for Worthington Kilbourne High School and I work as a color guard instructor for the Northridge HS Marching Band. During college I plan to get into Drum Corps International in the summers and possibly Winter Guard International in the winters. After the involvement fair, I decided to join a few clubs including National Society of Black Engineers, Engineering Without Borders, Society of Women Engineers, and the Hammock club. I love the concepts of math and science so I furthered my skills by interning for 3 summers with a company called Abbott. These summers lead me to pursue engineering and I wouldn’t change it for the world as it truly explained what projects engineers work on and helped me gather soft skills for business settings. My goals in life are to stay positive, constantly learn, and to try new things every once in a while, while understanding and maintaining the importance for a daily routine. Few fun facts are that I love to watch anime, stay organized, and try new things when my schedule allows me to do so. I’ll take any recommendations on places to study or eat and I’d love to meet new people!
My Personality Strengths
Love
When taking the strengths test, I hadn’t expected it to be considered as a strength, but am not shocked that it was my number 1! I know I have a huge heart and am will to give anyone the time of day when I know I have the time to. I love getting active in clubs, meeting knew people, trying new things, and hang out with my friends. It is something I’ve always valued and a mixture of work and play is what keeps life fun and productive for me.

Patience
Knowing that love is my number one, this one was a bit expected too. An open mind is the best one and being able to express acceptance and a willingness to understand how others truly are feeling makes me feel like I do my part in being a human. Emotions make life exciting and assuring that everyone has someone to confide in without worrying that they are being a bother to said person is another thing that I value. As far as my work ethic, I would say that my patience goes through the roof! I handle situations well and always react with a positive mindset because I know that there’s always a better side of something and I’ve just gotta get to it.
Kindness
I LOVE BEING HAPPY! There is so much good in the world and we need to spread it! You never know how someone may be feeling and maybe a smile is all they need to make their day just a bit better. No matter who someone may be, respect is always necessary, whether you agree with a decision of theirs or not: being kind is the cherry one top of this statement! When working in a team, this can be done in many forms such as listening to all as they speak, encouraging the idea of getting work done, and being flexible and understanding with time and money aspect of projects.
All of these are strengths that I value very-much-so and have held true to who I am as a person. Now that I have acknowledged it, I will try to incorporate my strengths into the work that I do throughout my college experience!
