Summary of ESLTECH 2011

The Variance of Learning Styles

My first main takeaway from this class is that everyone possesses different learning abilities. In our class section about learning styles, I learned that people tend to succeed when utilizing and taught in the learning style that best suits them. The readings, and subsequent discussion posts, about this topic really opened my eyes to why some professors and class styles suit some students better than others.

Branching Out in Organization

My second key takeaway from this course was that I don’t have to limit myself in how I organize my thoughts and resources. I’ve always been an avid utilizer of solely Google Calendar, and never thought to try and use alternate applications because those have always worked for me. Utilizing Study Scheduler, MindMup, and OneNote have really helped me stay on track, organize my ideas, and keep tabs on my assignments more efficiently and I would highly recommend these resources. The links to these resources are as follows:

Fostering Efficient Group Climates

My third takeaway from this course has been how to mitigate group conflict and thrive in groups. The “Managing Group Assignments in the Online Learning Environment” chapter by Patricia Lisk and Katherine Quartuccio was really helpful in understanding the source of conflict in groups, including personality differences, communication issues, differences in goals and objectives, gender, generational differences, culture, and access to resources. I also found that the article was very helpful in understanding how to mitigate said conflicts, and was very thorough in explaining the different stages of group processes. I would recommend this reading, or rereading, to any student looking to better navigate group situations, especially online.
