Climbing Mt. Katahdin: Two summers ago I had the opportunity to climb up to the second tallest point in New England, Mt. Katahdin in Maine.  I had always loved hiking and adventuring, but I had never done anything as awe-inspiring as this.  It took about five hours to reach the 5,280 feet to top and I loved every second of it.  Pushing my limits up the steep rocky paths, although mildly terrifying was exhilerating.  We bonded with other hikers as we were all aiming to reach the same heights.  One of the most special aspects of this climb was that I made it to the top with my three siblings and two of our cousins.  Once I reached the top I honestly had no words.  We literally stood in the clouds we were up so high.  This climb inspired my love for adventuring and pushing myself.  It reminded me that we are so much smaller than we seem and that the world is a massive place.  Hiking helps keep me grounded and inspired.  If I feel discouraged, I think about the time I climbed a mountain and how rewarding it was to reach the top.

Artifact: Painting

Artifact: Drawing and Design Projects

Experience: Art Class

My acrylic painting from Drawing and Painting II Class; For this project we had to modernize a painting from the neoclassical era and I decided to put my mother and I into the painting in place of the two original figures

This was another one of our Drawing and Painting projects; we were instructed to replicate one of Edgar Degas' many figure pieces in chalk pastel

For this specific project we had to recreate a photograph of a figure in a unique position. I chose an action shot of my younger brother up at bat at his baseball game.

This artifact represents my experience in my drawing and painting classes in high school.  I have always loved art but did not apply to be a member of the studio art program at my high school.  The next best way to incorporate art into my course load was to take the drawing and design classes that touched on different drawing techniques and the elements of art during my sophomore and senior years.  Through this class I learned that I have a unique combination of right and left brain processes.  I enjoy combining my analytical, detail oriented right brain with my creative left brain.  I will use this in the future to conjure creative solutions to problems I encounter in engineering.  I can offer a unique perspective that others may not have considered before.  It is not every day that people consider double majoring in Physics and art.  What surprised me the most during this project was how differently I approached a project compared to the other students.  Each girl had their own technique to going about their art, but I was significantly more detail oriented.  However I did learn that sometimes I have to use the bigger brushes and be more general to get the desired effect or outcome.  This can also apply to my future in relation to my career when completing a project.  In order to complete an assignment as efficiently as possible, it is usually better to work on all parts in equal amounts of time and effort rather than focusing on perfecting one specific part at a time.

Beth Wiberg

I am a first year at Ohio State this year from Cleveland, Ohio (Go Cavs).  Both my parents and one of my older sisters attended the university so I have been a buckeye for life.  Coming from a large family with three other siblings, and the upbringing of private, Catholic schooling throughout my entire life, community and education are extremely important to me.  I am driven to lead and hold a strong desire to help people.  For example, I led my class in high school as a member of student council and the National Honor Society, while completing over one hundred hours of service and attending the state science fair with my project about Algal Biofuels.  By far, one of the most meaningful  moments from high school stemmed from our annual Service Day.  Separated into random groups, the school transported us to different organizations, communities or schools around the greater Cleveland area to conduct service.  My experiences included cleaning up a nursing home, gardening, and helping out at a school for refugee children, thus harvesting my love for helping others.  The Ohio State University is the perfect school to satisfy my desires for service, greater education, and leadership, especially through their esteemed Army ROTC program which I am currently involved in.  Over the next four years, I hope to lead my classmates and motivate them with my enthusiasm and love for learning.  I hope to conduct research in physics or the environmental sciences and to expand my cultural palette by traveling and studying abroad.

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]
