IA Events for the month of October 2020

Current Events with the IA academic chair

During this IA event, the academic chair complied a list of current events to show IA members current events in the world. Some of the events that were discussed were protest in Bangkok and  endangered loa water frogs that gave birth to 200 offspring. This was a very helpful event which was a way to introduce people to world news.

One of the topics discussed were the protests in Bangkok. This is a student run protest against the government for how they are presenting topics in school. The students are protesting as a way to get away from the military influence in schools. One of the main ideas presented by the protestors is that the Prime Minister needs to resign from office because of his dictatorship over the government. They use the slogan “Resign, Rewrite, Reform” as a way to fight the ideas they have implemented in  schools throughout Thailand.

Another important event that was presented was how rescued endangered loa water frogs gave birth to 200 offspring. This is a very big deal because they are a critically endangered species. They were airlifted form Chile to Santiago zoo were herpetologist managed to nurse 12 of them back to health. For example, the new population is a needed addition too the entire population because climate change is destroying the frogs natural habitats.

This is a very eye opening event because it presents world news in a time where all anyone can talk about is the 2020 election.

PhD Information Night

Without this event, some students would be lost in what it takes to become a PhD student. Therefore, I recommend anyone who wants to apply to graduate school should take an opportunity to look over the presentation which talks about the application process, tips and tricks for undergraduate research, and research overview.

The most important part of this presentation was the application portion of the presentation. The application portion showed what type of test you need to take, what an important part of the application is, and what not to do with your personal statement when apply to a PhD program. The type of test you need to take to apply to any graduate school is the GRE which is like the ACT for college entrance. I really appreciated the way the presenter showed that the personal statement is just as important as anything else when it come to graduate school where you explain why you want to obtain a PhD in that subject.

They also talked about tips for undergraduate research and research overview. The point they presented for  choosing a research topics is choose what interest you and what you want to do. Some tips that the presenter showed was talk to professors who have research opportunities that are interesting to you rather than focusing on what ties to your major.

I found this event really beneficial because I am planning on apply to medical school which these tips can transfer to apply to graduate schools.

IA Events for the month of September 2020

Current Events with the IA Academic Chair

There was an event that took place on September 27 looking at current events in the world. For someone who doesn’t look at the news, this event was eye opening to the issues that are happening right now. During the event we looked at different articles ranging from the economy to wildlife. The topic that were covered were paid paternity leave and toxins affecting the elephants in Botswana.

To start off, the first current event was on how Paris is extending the amount of time for paid paternity leave. I had no idea this was even a thing, but the event gave me an insight into how the EU is making it mandatory for all companies to have paid paternity for everyone by 2022. The news article, however, primarily focused on how Paris just increased the amount of time from 14 days to 30 days.

There was an article that followed on how over three hundred elephants died because of Cyanobacteria in the watering holes in Botswana. This article was the most devastating  because they are still trying to figure out why this bacteria only killed elephants and how did it get to the watering holes. Scientists have taken samples of the surrounding soil and water to figure out what happened. There is a possible this is because of the use of pesticides on crops by the near by farmers.

This event was very eye opening because without this type of event, some people would not know about is happening it the world during the pandemic.

Fellowships 101 with the Undergraduate Fellowship Office

During this event, Jasmine and Corey who both work at the Undergraduate Fellowship Office (UFO) give students ideas of scholarships that are out their. They work with students who compete for competitive national awards. These awards are sponsored by non-profit and government organizations. There are two types of fellowship which are direct apply, where anyone can apply, and OSU nomination, which OSU has to nominate a student for. The OSU nominations scholarships are very competitive, and they vary on the amount of student that can be nominated. These type of awards can be from undergraduate tuition, graduate school tuition, or study abroad. Some of these awards, however, have certain time frame when a student can apply. For example, some awards are only allowed post-graduation and some require prerequisites. This was a perfect event to go to especially if you are planning to apply for fellowships through the UFO. It was also a perfect way to present students with different ways to obtain money for college or a study abroad.

During the presentation, Jasmine and Corey gave examples of fellowships students can apply for. The first fellowship that was presented was the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). This scholarship can be applied to any year, it is a fully funded eight to ten week summer abroad program for intensive language study, and the amount of language skill varies from none to two year at a college level. The next scholarship that was presented was the Beinecke Scholarship which is for students in their junior year going to graduate school to obtain a PhD or MFA in arts, humanities, or social sciences for students who show they are in need of financial aid. This scholarship awards its recipient $34,000 dollars to go towards graduate school.  The final scholarship presented was the Fulbright Scholarship. This is a university nominated scholarship that is very competitive for student who want to go a year abroad after graduation, and the UFO recommends students to look into this scholarship as early as their spring semester of junior year. This event was very beneficial for any student who has a desire to go abroad and get information on fellowships that help students achieve this goal.
