Welcome to my blog site for Pharmacy 7588: Toxic Substances!  Throughout the semester we learned about a wide variety of toxic substances and their effects on biological systems, including pesticides, metals, solvents and vapors, radioactive materials, plants and animals, excess calories, nanotoxicology, and ecotoxicology.  For each topic, we were presented information on each substance’s mechanism of action of toxicity, their sources of exposure, signs and symptoms of toxicity, and treatment methods.  The purpose of this blog is to look further in depth at one of the toxic substances in four of the categories covered in this class: pesticides, metals, solvents, and plants/animals.  The substances covered in this blog are:

  • Pesticides: Benzimidazoles
  • Metals: Selenium
  • Solvents: Toluene
  • Plants/Animals: Gila monster

I selected benzimidazoles, selenium, and toluene because they were all substances that were a familiar name, but I didn’t know much about them in terms of their toxicity.  I thought it would be interesting to dig a little deeper into each of them to have a better understanding of the exposure sources, toxicokinetics, and possible treatments.  I chose the Gila monster for my animal blog because, as a pharmacist, I was familiar with a component of the saliva of Gila monsters being used in positive way for newer treatments for diabetes.  I wanted to take a further look into the toxic side of the Gila monster.  I hope you enjoy my blog!
