G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: This summer I plan on participating in a Study Abroad Program through OSU. It is called India: Sustainable Food Systems in an Emerging Economy. This program will allow me to travel, will expose me to another culture and new people.

Original Inquiry: I would love to be involved with research with a professor here at OSU. I am interested in researching into sustainable food systems in poverty stricken countries.

Academic Enrichment: I am involved in SWE, an organization the empowers women to get involved with engineering and connects women in engineering at OSU.

Leadership Development: This summer I am looking for internships that relate to my major, Food Engineering. In any future internship I will be able to demonstrate good leadership amongst other employees.

Service Engagement: I am involved in my Year of Service project for Mount Leadership Scholars. I have been volunteering at the Broad Street Afterschool Program the past couple of months. At this service site, I have mentored and interacted with children who are in need of academic encouragement.

Experience:

I worked at a company called National Sintered Alloys. This company manufactures powdered metal parts for lawnmowers, cars etc. I worked both in the office and in the factory. In the office setting, I compiled data in excel relating to the company’s monthly statistics on production, tool breakage, scrap metal and other various data sets. In the factory, I worked in both the inspection room and assembly line. A majority of the other factory workers were Hispanic, therefore I adapted and worked on my Spanish vocabulary. I also had the opportunity to assist in programming a mechanical robot arm. I worked to program the robot arm to pick metal parts off of a conveyor belt, flip them over and place them in a specific position on a palette. The robot arm was then programed to move the palette and place it on a rack. I was able to help significantly using my knowledge from my engineering programming courses. This work experience improved my ability to communicate my ideas, concerns and strategies effectively. These communicating skills enable me to work well in a team and take both leadership and follower-ship roles.

Creating a Camera Dolly

In my Senior engineering class last year, students were split into groups and assigned the task of finding a problem that we were interested in solving. My group’s problem was the lack of a motorized camera dolly for our TV Studio’s filming purposes. We decided to come up with a basic design and then split the design into individual components which could then be assigned to a member of the group. I worked on the lifting component of the dolly. The largest obstacle with developing the lift would be making sure that the lift could hold and raise the weight of the cameras used by the TV Studio. This was quite the challenge, as my class was relatively limited as far as materials were concerned. The head of the TV Studio did give us some funds to work with which we spent on wheels, stronger motors and specialized drill bits.

My design of the lift went through several phases as I found out that the first model did not run as smoothly as we would have liked. The process and development of the whole project as well as my individual part can be found in this prezi link.

Vacation Bible School in the Dominican Republic

“Every summer the Episcopal Church in Connecticut organizes a group of teenagers and chaperones to run a Vacation Bible School for children in the Dominican Republic and St. Andrew’s is an active participant in these trips. Carrying suitcases full of arts supplies, crafts, jump ropes, drawing paper, soccer balls and more, students head to Santo Domingo and work tirelessly for one very hot week in July.”

This trip greatly impacted my outlook on life because for the first time ever, I saw true happiness. I didn’t realize that happiness could come from so little. Happiness at least in my life and my hometown revolved mostly around material objects and social status. In the Dominican Republic, these “sources of happiness” were hardly relevant. Instead, happiness in this little community  derived from family, faith and community. In the future I look forward to returning to this little town to see its progress as a community and to rekindle friendships I made with these Dominican children and adults, just 3 years ago. Eventually, I would like to spend enough time here so that I may become fluent in Spanish.

Traveling to Spain

Two years ago I went on a trip to Spain with my AP Spanish class. We visited four different cities, Madrid, Granada, Sevilla, and Malaga. This trip involved  many cultural experiences in each city. Our teacher encouraged us to talk to locals throughout the trip in order to improve our Spanish speaking skills. Exploring each city allowed me to understand Spanish culture better as well as allowing me to experience day to day life in a Spanish city. Here, I have included a picture, click on the image to follow a link to an article in the Hartford Courant about the trip.

About Me

I am a second year Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) student at the Ohio State University. I am interested in an internship for the summer of 2018 as well as a co- op position for the fall of 2018. I am interested in working with a large food company that selects multiple college students as interns and has a developed program to teach interns what tasks engineers at the company might perform.

I am specifically interested in the food and agricultural engineering field because I believe food and agriculture are essentials to human life. The future in these fields have been expanding in terms of developing new ways to package, produce and store foods as well as new methods to grow food. In my FABE classes, we have discussed the recent methods of vertical growing. This concept is of interest to me, because it deserves more attention, considering that it is a viable solution to aim to end the issue of world hunger.
