Summary of my paper

My paper focused on the problem of international students faced during their daily and academic life here. There are three most important factors that make me have this thought, the unfamiliarity with the new environment, the potential discrimination and they are not confident enough of their language abilities. Most of the international students around us are Asian and compare the culture of Asian with the culture of America, there are some obvious differences reflected on the dietary habit, the language and the academic part. All of these things might cost the international students a long time to adapt. About the discrimination part, I personally think that the existence of White privilege, the race discrimination and the gender discrimination effect our life a lot. The discrimination might cause the students have inappropriate resistance strategies. The discrimination make people feel uncomfortable, cause depression and let people have a fear of communicating with others. The last and also the most important one is the language problem. At first most of the international students do not have enough confidence with their language abilities, the rarely tried to talk to their local students classmate and they just gather in a small circle with people come from the same country. The classroom culture is also different here, some of the international students might also feel they cannot get used to the different culture here quickly.

I am sure that international students will get used to the life here, but I personally think that international students have more difficulties on the process of this because there are a lot of difference in different parts that they are totally unfamiliar with.

Outline of Final Paper

Outline of Paper

  • Introduce the reason that make me choose this topic and also the background.
  • Argument 1:

International students cannot get used to the life because they are not familiar with the new environment around them. They might miss things from their hometown and this might last for a long time.

  • The interview with international students around me to support the argument.
  • Counter Argument:

Some of the students might give different answer during the interview, like they perfect adapted to the new environment, but I will insert the information from the resource that I found to support my argument.

  • Argument 2:

‘White privilege’ might exist during the campus and there might also be discrimination between students this might also be a reason that international students cannot get into the life in college easily.

  • Counter Argument:

Students might think that after the civil war the discrimination do not exist anymore, for here I will insert the information I found in the article of an international student, the topic of that paper is about the discrimination and the White privilege in college.

  • Argument 3:

International students have language problems and the different culture from America, some of the countries in Asia have a thought that people should not be too active and people should be introverted. They are not that good at express their emotions or feelings. When you are not able to talk with others it is really difficult for you to get into the life in college.

  • Interview with Laurie Maynell, the expert of this topic.
  • Counter Argument:

All the students passed the harsh SAT or ACT test to get into the college, there supposed to be no language problem during their life. For here I would like to insert the examples from people around me and the information I found from the article on line.

  • Conclusion: International students might get used to the life here in the United States, but there must be a period that they have difficulties to this unfamiliar environment. Due to all these three reasons, I think that international students have more difficulties in get into the life in the college.

Argument #3

International students have language problems and the different culture from America, some of the countries in Asia have a thought that people should not be too active and people should be introverted. White people gather together and international students might like to spend their time with the person who come from the same place.

To Do List For Week 4

  • Read Chapter 9, 10
  • 3 additional sources, annotated, to my blog
  • Build, in outline form, your second argument
  • discuss group project
  • start forming my arguments together

Argument #1

International students cannot get used to the life because they are not familiar with the new environment around them. They might miss things from their hometown and this might last for a long time. You are not familiar with the culture here and you are not able to join their conversation. The different culture here might also affect the student. International students might even struggle with academic problems. They focus on the academic area too much and they do not have time to find a way to get into the social life in the college.
