G.O.A.L.S. Update
Having been in college for four semesters now, there is a lot that I have experienced as a student. I have become more aware of our position in the globe as scientists and engineers. Learning about technology and how it has politics in itself has been an eye opening experience to the responsibility of engineers and scientists. Many of the discoveries that we make have the ability to change the world, and there is a level of caution that that needs to be done with. For example, there are several ways that the technology in the United States is fueled by other countries, such as the use of clinical trials in poor parts of the word where people need treatment. The use of rare metals in our technology is mined at a heavy cost to the environment and the surrounding communities. Getting further into my classes at Ohio State, I have learned many new things that will help me to be able to make a contribution to society, and am seeking out research opportunities to enhance my education. In leadership development, I have grown having staffed in National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, which has taught me more about serving as a leadership. Looking forward, I will be a squad leader in the Ohio State Marching Band, which is a great opportunity to practice leadership and management skills. One of my favorite parts about Green Engineering Scholars is the opportunity to serve other. Primarily it had been life changing to be involved with the toy adaptation program, which aims to re purpose toys for mentally disabled children. Getting to help lead a workshop, where I was directly connecting with families in this situation has been an incredible experience for me, and had put meaning behind the projects that we complete.
Work Sampling Project
In this project, a work sampling was done in order to determine if there was a difference of elevator usage with respect to the time of day. Using statistics, it was determined that there needed to to be 68 collections of data to determine the amount of times the elevator was in use. This method is commonly used in a manufacturing situation to determine how often a particular task is occurring. Using a randomized sample at two times of day, it was found that the time of day did not affect the elevator usage. Attached is a final report that consists of our data and findings.
