Over this past semester I have learned a great deal through my civil engineering materials classes and labs. Many skills I have accuired through this course include sieve analysis, concrete mixing, concrete design, wood strength in all three direction and the effect moisture has on its strength and failure type, and new green materials like green steel and steel foam. In addition to the new things I have learned this semester but I have honed my matlab skills through numerical methods. I have learned how to approximate the unknown variables of test results. Both of these newly acquired skills will help with both construction projects but will help derive the best design for a project. In my future career I hope to not only build better and more environmentally friendly projects but to help produce better procedures and more eco-friendly materials.

Year in Review

The most meaningful thing I participated in over this year was the volunteer service I did with F.L.O.W during one of the weekends in Earth Month. Since Trump has set into motion the U.S. being less environmentally friendly it is important for each community member to help reduce the harm they are doing to the Earth with trash, use of electricity, or anything else that pollutes or harms the environment. So I went out and helped plant trees and cut down invasive species out by the waterfront of the Olentangy River, for over 7 hours spread through out those 2 days. This not only helped the surrounding species, but reduced the amount of time I spent on my phone or computer during the weekend using up electricity. Another meaningful thing I participated in over the past year was being a GES mentor, where two of my friends I made through GES helped guide and teach four freshman the in and outs of how to manage classes, studying, GES, and just plain life. The first few weeks of the Autumn semester we all got acquainted and we discussed how to manage their time most efficiently and what to expect from their first year. Overall these two experiences helped shaped my desired path for my personal life regarding responsibility to not only myself but for everyone around me and the planet and all its wonders.

This past semester I have learned many things about civil materials, specifically about concrete. One lab corresponding to this material allowed me to understand how to mix concrete properly and how different mixes can lead to different strengths of the concrete. Many other labs I completed in this class involved finding how different attributes of different materials effect the overall strength when used in construction.

Year in Review

During the fall semester of 2015 and spring semester of 2016, I participated in a few community service events such as picking up trash after a home game along West Lane Avenue and back alleys around North Campus for a couple hours. During the trash pick up, the group I was with sorted the trash and recycling as we picked the items of the sidewalk and streets. After all the groups where done, Lane Avenue was empty of litter and trash that was left from the tailgaters and parties along the street. Other community service events I participated in my first year were the Toy Adaptation Lab, where my group adapted a bear to sing the ABC’s when the disabled person pressed a large button.

In the 2016 Spring semester in Engineering 1182 three friends and I were in group together to create an Advanced Energy Vehicle in the Advanced Energy Vehicle Design Lab that took place through out that semester. The link to all results and documentation of the lab can be found here: https://u.osu.edu/engr1182s1spr2016groupf/. In the section we were apart of, we finished in the top two most energy efficient vehicles as a result we participated in the AEV Showcase on April 18, 2016. We were able to complete the first task as one of the most accurate, and finished in the top 15.

In the 2016 Fall semester I participated in a few community service events. I also was a mentor for GES, in which I helped incoming Freshman in the program learn the ropes of the first two semesters at Ohio State. As for class work I used AutoCAD Civil 3D for the first time to make a map of surveyed points on the oval in my Intro to Surveying class.

Global Awareness: Although I have only been in three countries,-the U.S., Canada, and Mexico- I understand that no country is alike, and understanding the differences and similarities can better the global community. With understanding of different cultures stereotypes and conflicts can be avioded or resolved. That is why I plan on traveling to different countries when the opportunity comes and is econmically viable. In addition I believe helping those less fortunate is ideal, so I hope to give some time to help out with the international communtiy.

Original Inquiry: Other than my inquiry labs, and the trebuchet that my classmates and I built outside of school not many options were available in my interests. I plan to get involved with a research that is both usefull to my field and is environmentally friendly.

Academic Enrichment: I have attended some seminars held by scientists, inventors, and sucessfull businessman outside of the classroom for extra credit in my AP courses, enrichment of ideas put forth in said courses, and exemplify the results of putting the concepts into action. I plan to go beyond what is necessary, and learn a broad scope of ideas besides the core, in order to become a well rounded scholar.

Leadership Development: While attending High School I held the position as treasurer of the Junior Statesman of America’s local chapter. While attending OSU I plan to get involved and even become a leader in a few of the many clubs.

Service Engagement: Since, being inducted into NHS I have continually set aside part of my time every week to help the community. When I am available on the first Saturday of each month, for the last two years, I have helped out with a local church and carried or gathered food items for the needy. In addition I lent a hand to my elderly neighbor and mowed her lawn twice a week till she moved away. I’m planning to give some time every week to bettering the Columbus area as well as the Campus area by getting involved with the local church and many other organizations I have heard about.

TEAM CANADA Elon Musk’s Hyperloop 28 Oct 12_40 FINAL

The problem we discussed was the feasibility of Elon Musk’s Hyperloop. We found that the Hyperloop although not feasible, it has the right idea with getting the pot stirring with new ideas on energy efficient transportation. This idea is constantly being updated, but the land that it would be used in has been contracted to the California Rail System. Overall this has shown me that sometimes you don’t need a workable idea, as long as you are just trying to get transportation to be more efficient and environmentally friendly it will get people thinking about new innovated ideas. In addition, this project opened my eyes to all of the green projects that are happening around the world, and in our University.

I am from Miamisburg, Ohio and I am the oldest of three. My dad attended UW. My major is Civil Engineering and i am currently studying to specialize in structural engineering. I have found the rhythm for studying and have received decent grades over the past two years. I have learned a lot over the four semesters and hoping to apply it to a internship over  the summer.
