Week of 7 – 11 Scouting Report Summary

AGRONOMIC CROPS:

  • Corn: Scouted fields ranged from v5 to v14 stage of development.  Grey leafspot showed up in several fields, not widespread or heavy.  Corn borer, armyworm and Japanese beetles damage was all at light levels.
  • Soybeans:  Scouted soybeans ranged from V4 to V8 stage of development.  Japanese beetle feeding damage ranged from light to moderate in some fields. Septoria brown spot was found. Pokeweed escapes are becoming large in some fields.
  • Alfalfa: Potato leafhoppers and Japanese beetles were noted at low levels.

Week of June 16 – 20 Scout Summary

AGRONOMIC CROPS:

  • Corn: Scouted fields ranged from v1 to v7 stage of development.  One field that had slugs at threshold level, treated with bait and got very good control, new leaves did not show slug feeding damage.  Most other fields had just light slug feeding damage.  Other insects found in small numbers causing light damage to corn include black cutworm, corn borer, stalk borer and armyworm.  Weeds are an issue in some fields.
  • Soybeans:  Many soybean fields just planted.  Stage of development ranged from emergence to V3. Some light slug and bean leaf beetle feeding damage was noted.
  • Alfalfa: Potato leafhoppers were noted at low levels.  Aphid numbers have declined from the previous week.  The alfafa plant bug showed up in small to medium numbers and a few stink bugs were found in sweep nets.

Week of June 9 – 13 Scout Summary

AGRONOMIC CROPS:

  • Corn: Scouted fields ranged from emerging to V5 stage of development.  Slug feeding damage ranged from 2 to just over 35%.  One field had an area of slug feeding at threshold level.  Black cutworm damage was found a 1-2% cut plants and cutworms at instar stage 6-7.
  • Soybeans:  Many soybean fields just planted.  Stage of development ranged from emergence to V1. Some light slug and bean leaf beetle feeding damage was noted.
  • Alfalfa: Potato leafhoppers were noted at low levels.  In some fields, aphids were being found.  Scouts also noted the presence of lady beetle adults and larvae.

Week of June 2- 6 Scout Summary

AGRONOMIC CROPS:

  • Corn: Scouted fields ranged from emerging to V3 stage of development.  Light slug feeding was noted on most no-till fields.  Light black cutworm feeding/damage was noted on most fields with one field approaching the threshold treatment level.
  • Soybeans:  A lot of soybeans were planted the week of June 2 and more still to go in.  Most scouted fields are just at the emerging stage of development.  Some light slug feeding was noted.
  • Alfalfa: Scouts noted alfalfa weevils pupating.  Most alfalfa stands that have not been harvested are at 25% bloom.  Scouts will be monitoring for potato leaf hopper in stands growing for 2nd cutting.

Week of May 12 – 16 Scout Summary

AGRONOMIC CROPS:

  • Corn and Soybeans: Planting just starting, some corn had sprouted but not yet emerged.

 

  •  Alfalfa: Scouts noted alfalfa weevils at first through 3rd instar larval stages. Numbers are higher than the previous week but below threshold level.  Alfalfa height noted between 9 to 22 inches.

  • Planting just starting

 Alfalfa:

  • Scouts noting scattered and variable amount of winter kill due to heaving.  Also finding first instar alfalfa weevils at low levels, below threshold treatment levels.
