Reflectance Sensors

The reflectance sensors are an important component of the AEV.  They operate by recording changes in the reflected light the sensors emit [2].  The reflectance sensors are attached to the support arm, close to the front wheel of the AEV, as shown in Figure 1.  The adjacent wheel has alternating strips of reflective tape, causing changes in reflected light as the wheel rotates.

The setup allows for the distance the AEV travels to be determined.  This capability is important to meet the objectives of the AEV design project.  Due to the delays in propeller rotation, using time-based motor operation controls would be imprecise.  The ability to use AEV position to control motor operation promises to provide much finer control of motion.
