Statement of action

For the remainder of my time at Ohio State I will continue to work extremely hard when studying which will be my main goal! I will also put a lot of my energy into research and my service fraternity and hope to take on a leadership role within my fraternity. I would also like to find a job where I can work as a CNA or PCA just one shift a week to keep up my skills and earn some extra money. Starting next semester I will allocate 2-3 hours per day of strict MCAT studying and begin to research medical schools that interest me. During the spring semester I will continue to study for around 2-3 hours per day and plan on taking the MCAT during that summer. The following senior year I will start applying for medical school as well as continue to do well in my classes and most importantly enjoy my last few months as an undergrad!

Vision Statement

My vision for this upcoming semester is to finalize my decision to be pre-med. From there I see myself taking a year off to do a volunteer abroad and then beginning med school in the following fall.

Sophomore Year Reflection

Wow, what a year. Sophomore year has brought on so many different challenges and successes that I could have never expected. Starting with the fall semester I found a research lab that I am truly passionate about. I am a member of the Sizemore lab, which investigates the growth factor receptor beta, PDGFRβ, which is believed to initiate breast cancer brain metastasis. For the first time in my life I was able to apply information that I worked so hard to learn in high level science courses to real life research. It was a very fulfilling experience and allowed me to appreciate the things I am learning so much more. Also during the fall semester I joined Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity at Ohio State. Service has always been one of my greatest passions so finding a group of people with similar interests that I can volunteer with was life changing. Some of my favorite events that I volunteered for included the Down Syndrome Gala where I helped with the silent auction, wheel chair basketball where I helped set up concessions and played basketball with people with disabilities, and the Columbus Women’s Respite Center which helps women who are victims of human trafficking get food, health check ups, and resources to help them out of their terrible situation where I helped to organize and distribute clothing. All of these volunteer events have really allowed me to learn about so many different populations of people. I have been touched in so many different ways by APO and I can’t wait to grow as a leader and person within the organization for years to come. Overall,  I had a really great first semester of sophomore year and alot of personal and professional growth happened during the time.

The second semester of sophomore also started out really great, I continued to volunteer with APO and have gave myself the goal of taking on a leadership role in the upcoming year within the fraternity. I also continued to learn more scientific technique and information about Breast cancer brain metastasis and more. With the closing of Ohio State and the rapid initiation of online classes with the onset of COVID-19, I started to face some challenges with focusing and concentrating on school work as my whole family was also working remotely.  I learned just how important it is to stick to a morning routine and more importantly properly plan my day. If it weren’t for my planner I wouldn’t be able to keep track of the assignments and studying. Around the mid April I went back to Greenfields, a local nursing home a rehab center and my passion for the elderly and helping others was reignited. Even though working through a pandemic in one of the most susceptible places has come with a lot of challenges it has taught me so much about medicine and my life professionally and personally. I have grown so much from this pandemic and although I wish it would have never happened I learned to make the most of the situation and continued to help those in dire need of mental and physical support.

Working through Passion

I have had one of the greatest pleasures of becoming a CNA in the summer following my freshman year and continuing to work as a CNA throughout the remainder of that summer and into this summer of 2020. Working through a pandemic has brought many challenges mentally and physically. As nursing homes have been some of the hardest hit areas, it has been important to maintain a positive mindset and constantly practice persistence even when times get tough and anxiety sets in. This experience has really tested my mindset on medicine but through the process I realized that medicine is something I truly LOVE, and I wouldn’t change the challenges or chaos for anything. There is nothing that makes me happier than helping others, watching people have amazing health turn arounds and being there for patients/residents through their toughest times. I know in my heart that medicine is where I am supposed to be. Being a CNA has taught me so much and I am forever grateful that when I wake up in the morning I am excited to go into work and see the residents’ smiling faces.

Year in Review

With the conclusion of my first semester as a college student nearing I have noticed an immense of personal growth. Before coming to Ohio State, I wasn’t even sure that I made the right decision about where to go to school. This indecisive tendency did not just occur in school but also in my own personal life. I have grown into an adult who is not scared anymore of the unknowns anymore, but rather, someone who is excited about all the opportunities available.  I see myself becoming a leader within my community here at Ohio State. As part of the the Catholic Center at Ohio State I have grown to have wonderful relationships and can see myself leading groups there in the near future. I have also begun to solidify my goals for the future working harder and harder towards them every single day, challenging myself to be the best Bri possible. This semester I have unleashed a new version of myself that I didn’t even know existed. I have gained a lot of confidence knowing that my studying pays off. I have been receiving grades that I never before would be possible yet, I’m still working to be better.

A huge part of my personal growth is my participation in the Biological Sciences Scholars program at Ohio State. This scholars program has taught me new study methods, ways to get involved in my community through research, volunteerism, and debates. Through all of these events I have gained the confidence to become the person I am today. Coming to a new city five hours away from home isn’t easy. I didn’t know anyone or anything about the area. Finding new places to volunteer would have been impossible without the scholars program. I have learned how to reach out to researchers in order to find a research topic that I am interested in and can contribute vastly with. I am currently working with such researchers in finding a proper position for myself. I am extremely excited for these next few upcoming years and can’t wait to watch myself grow into the best version of myself.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: To be globally aware is to not only accept, tolerate and understand other cultures but also to engage and appreciate those who are different than us. Because of our difference our world has become a beautiful, wonderful, exciting place. Personally I choose to be more globally aware and appreciative by traveling and experiencing different customs and traditions. This allows me to create more well rounded morals.
  • Original Inquiry: Having unique innovative thoughts helps kickstart our future. TO have original inquiry means to have new ideas to improve our world. There is nothing that excites me more than being able to make the world a better place and thinking outside of the box is the way to get there. During my time at OSU I would like to get involved in research hopefully cancer, childhood psychiatry or geriatrics related.
  • Academic Enrichment: To fulfill the goal of academic enrichment one must push themselves to their limits everyday academically. This means taking on hard course work, pushing oneself academically in and out of the classroom and using ones education with purpose and intention towards a career and life options. I will fulfill this goal by taking many difficult courses with the intention of graduating a year early and going right into PA school.
  • Leadership Development: As part of the Biological Science Scholars Program I will engage myself in leadership opportunities in and out of the classroom. In the future I will take classes that will help me be a strong leader.
  • Service Engagement: Service is a very important part of the honors and scholars G.O.A.L.S. and who I am. I will commit myself to serving and helping the community in ways that I can help the most. I have been apart of multiple volunteer organizations and continue to do so. Currently I volunteer everyday at the Wexner Medical Center helping patients and families. By giving back to the community I am exposed to social issues and learn problem solving techniques in order to deal with problems that may occur.

Career

My Resume

This upcoming summer I will be immersing myself further into the health care field by working at a local nursing home as a full time CNA. By working as a CNA I will have a lot of patient contact and following the summer I will make my decision about the future of my career path. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work in a field I love and assist residents throughout their day with any needs they may have!
