Blog Post 4

Welcome back to my blog! This week I want to discuss important things to keep in mind when searching and researching something of interest or for academic reasons. More specifically, the source credibility of a resource you are considering on using. Firstly, you want your resource to be reliable. What I mean by this is that you want the information you have found to be accurate and informative. Some question you can ask yourself to help determine the source reliability is :  Is their contact info available? What are the credentials of the author? What is the reputation of the publisher ? Also what is the type of document and who is the publisher?  A couple type of reliable domains include  .gov, .edu and .org to name a few. Be careful when using .org because some websites like wikipedia, wikibooks, wikiversity give broad generalization and aren’t reliable when conducting research. There are many deceiving results that come up in your search engine and it is important to identify them and not include them in your research. Secondly, you want quality. Some characteristics that can help you identify good quality information is : is the information biased? Are there external sources that were used and cited in citations ? Was it well written ? The third thing to keep in mind is utility. In other words, how is the research related to your topic and do you have an appropriate audience? Part of conducting good research includes narrowing your search and giving external information that is relevant and on topic. This will give you better credentials and make your research more accurate. Remember that is is possible to give too much information that doesn’t directly correlate to your research and always remember the saying quality over quantity!

I hope you found this information to be as helpful as I did! For more information on college related topics, tune in next week!

Addition to the 3rd Blog

After viewing the video, I hope you found the video to be as insightful as I did! I have always been curious about science and more specifically space. With web enhanced learning and viewing strategies, it is important to outline your notes similar to the Cornell, Mind map or keywords style. It is not enough to just listen and think that you will retain all that information. Using bullet points and references that the lecturer or powerpoint tells you can be helpful to reference when preparing for an exam! Remember to put the date, what you’re going over and the questions that the professor is going to answer in your lecture. Make sure to also put what you need to review and what you will be going over in the next lecture. This is great when preparing for upcoming information you will learn because when you are sitting in lecture, you will have already briefly gone over the topic so then you can focus on more important information than the basics and even ask questions if you need clarification!

Blog Post 2

Welcome Back! My second blog is going to be about focusing on YOU! It is so so important to know your yourself. Specifically, to know your strengths, weaknesses, goals, and studying habits. When preparing for college, one of your main goals should be to diversify your learning preferences, skills, and strategies ( pg. 4.). Even though you are going to school to major in something that you are passionate about, it is so important to get the most of out every class you take. The in class lectures, readings, projects, and podcast lectures can teach you valuable lessons that you will most likely use in the future. Take time out of your day to review and reflect each lesson or new material you learn that day. It will help not only retain information, but you will be more prepared when studying for exams. If you find yourself confused on material, it is so important to ask the professor before they build on the material and you spiral into more confusion! Writing down your notes from lectures and readings will help you stay organized with the material you learn. It is proven that writing things down helps your mind retain that information! Also, it will help you keep tract of potential syllabus changes or information about an upcoming exam!

Over your college career, you will most likely take hybrid classes which are a mix of in class learning and online learning. Part of the online learning will be composed of discussion boards where your professor will post a question and you will respond as well as comment on your peers posts’. It is so important to be concise with your answer and give constructive criticism when responding to your classmates. Some good pointers from the reading include : reviewing earlier postings, review ant rules and etiquette guide, take your time, and write postings in a clear and expressive manner (Watkins and Corry). As a current student at OSU, I can’t stress enough how important it is to develop good habits for online discussions. One last piece of advice I have for you is to be organized! “Creating a folder for each of your courses” will help you keep track of past assignments and future assignments (Watkins and Corry). If you plan on being a full time student, you can expect to take 4 classes per semester. It can be hard to keep track of your classes if you don’t have some type of organization and don’t write due dates in a calendar. In most cases, professors will not expect late work, so missing an assignment can drastically lower your grade.
