ATTENTION ALL HORSE MEMBERS!! Our horse paperwork deadline is quickly approaching on June 1, 2022. Members will need to turn in their horse declaration form, Immunization form, stall reservation for County Fair, Lease agreements, and PAS forms for those participating. The Saddle Horse Committee and Athens County Horse Advisors have partnered together to offer a PAS show on Saturday June 4, 2022 and we will conclude with a Fun show following the PAS events/classes. The PAS show is the state qualifying event for horse members to be eligible to compete at the Ohio State Fair. This event will be held at the Washington County Fair located at 922 Front Street Marietta Ohio. Horse members in Washington and Athens County will not be charged a fee for PAS classes, however all other out of county participants must pre-register with a $10 fee per class by May 27th. The Fun show will immediately follow the PAS event and all participants must be 4-H / FFA members of 4-H project age and follow all 4-H Uniform Horse Rules. Fun Show classes are $2 per class with a fee of $10 max for the day. Participants will register at the event approximately 1 hour before the show. PAS Fun Show
The last Educational Equine Session is scheduled for June 25th from 9am to noon at the Washington County Fair, any horse member planning to exhibit at fair must attend one Equine Session to be eligible to show. For questions please call OSU Extension 740-376-7431.
Between January and March in 2022, Ohio State University Extension will be offering Forages for Horses as a virtual course. One live webinar will be offered per month along with “work at your own pace” materials that accompany each webinar. The Forages for Horses program is a collaboration between Ohio State University Extension, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, Ohio Department of Agriculture, and the Ohio Forage and Grasslands Council.
Each webinar will be offered live on Zoom at 7 P.M. and feature presentations in a 90-minute span. Attendees will be able to interact with the speakers and ask questions in real time. Once registered, attendees will be granted access to the full online course including the webinars and complementary resources. Participants that attend all three webinars will have the opportunity to earn a certificate of completion. Registered participants will also receive a USB drive of the full course manual (digital version) by mail.

- Thursday, January 20th 7:00 PM- Hay Analysis and Feeding Different Classes of Horses
- Thursday, February 17th 7:00 PM – Nutrition and Parasites
- Thursday, March 17th 7:00 PM- Pasture and Weed Management, Soil Fertility, and Species Selection
The Forages for Horses course utilizes Scarlet Canvas. For best performance, Canvas should be used on the current or first previous major release of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser.
Cost of the course is $75. Registration includes access to all online content through December 31, 2022, live webinar access, webinar recordings, the course manual, virtual social hours, and a voucher for free attendance to one of nine planned pasture walks to be offered spring to fall of 2022 at various locations across the state. Current and new members of the Ohio Forage and Grasslands Council are eligible for a $15 discount on registration.

The Washington County Fair is announcing important updates for the horse exhibitors. All horses will be asked to move out of the fairgrounds on Monday September 6, 2021 from 3pm to 6pm. Horse members who stall / rent at the fairgrounds will remain in place. Also there will be no parking or camping on the ball fields this year due to safety concerns. A senior fair board member will be contacting you with updated procedures for camping, or a refund if you choose not to camp. The fair is hosting a fireworks show on Monday evening and the new updates are for the safety of the horses and their owners. The Washington County Saddle Horse Committee has added a horse equine session and fun show for horse members to complete on August 14,2021. The event will begin at 4pm and preregistration 1 hour before the show. The fun show will offer exhibitors the opportunity to run through 12 classes with their project horse. Educational instruction will be offered by horse committee members and all 4-H rules apply. Please refer to the uniform horse rule book. Exhibitors must preregister 1 hour before the show and must be a 4H member in Washington County to be eligible. Exhibitors will wear jeans, t-shirts, boots, and helmet for the duration of the equine session. Please see the attached flyer for class details and time. The Washington County Saddle Horse Committee is excited to announce their partnership with Applebees to host a fundraising event. Mark your calendars for June 29, 2021 and stop in and order off the “Together We Care Menu”. If you prefer not to dine in then call for your curbside to go order and help raise funds to support the 4-H horse program in Washington County. The 4-H horse program will receive 50% of the menu item profit for all items purchased off the “Together We Care” menu on Tuesday June 29th. We are encouraging all of our 4-H members, volunteers, business supporters and others to order lunch or dinner to help us with needed supplies and awards for the horse program. This event will run all day and the Washington County Saddle Horse Committee Members and 4-H members will be present to greet guests from 4-8pm. It is with regret that we are cancelling the 2021 Performance Against Standards (PAS) horse show scheduled for June 12, 2021. There are still many opportunities for members to travel to neighboring counties and many counties across Ohio. Please visit horse.osu.edu for a complete list of shows. Horse members who wish to qualify to attend state fair may attend up to 2 shows and must qualify in 2 classes to attend the Ohio State Fair. Those members who are attending shows in other counties need to have paperwork signed by our 4-H professionals in Washington County a week before the show and they must also preregister for the show. All horse paperwork including animal declarations and immunization records must be on file by June 1 and the member must have attended an educational equine session prior to attending the PAS show. The member will need to pay any associated class fees and obtain a receipt to submit to the saddle horse committee. The committee will then review the classes and receipts and offer a reimbursement for Washington County Horse members up to $40. For more information please call us at 740-376-7431.
The Washington County 4-H Saddle Horse Committee and the Extension Office will be hosting a mandatory parent meeting for all horse project members on Thursday May 13,2021. The meeting will be at the OSU Extension Office located at 202 Davis Ave Marietta beginning at 6:30pm. Social distancing and masks are required for the program. Our first Educational Equine Session will be held Sunday April 25th at 1pm in the afternoon. The horse session will be held at 1430 Rosemar Rd. Vienna WV. The session will consist of showmanship and we will be hosting a Chiropractic Speaker. Members may bring their horses to the session and new horse members will be required to watch the safety video before they can participate in the session. The video will be shown at the beginning of the event. Masks and social distancing is required for all those attending. Please bring your own water bottle to the event as well.
