Camp Counselor Applications – Due March 5

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The 4-H Camp Counselors are a group of 4-H teens selected to assist in being responsible for campers ages 6-15 during 4-H camp. As a result of participation, counselors will develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations needed for adult success, and the Washington County 4-H program will be strengthened and expanded.  Roles and Responsibilities of 4-H Camp Counselors include:

  • Attend required trainings prior to camp
  • Market and promote camp
  • Serve in a leadership and teaching role to other counselors
  • Serve on committees or other groups to plan programs at camp
  • Conduct self in an appropriate manner before, during, and after camp while serving as a role model to campers and peers
  • Assist staff and other counselors with camp activities; work as a team to implement the activities
  • Know and understand all safety guidelines, including emergency procedures, associated with the camp and program areas
  • Follow and enforce camp rules
  • Assure for safety of campers at all times including in cabins, sessions, and large group activities
  • Be aware of child protection regulations and report any child abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect in accordance with university policy
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues
  • Ensure campers’ health and hygiene, e.g., brushing teeth, eating meals, taking medication, etc.
  • Promote camper participation during camp
  • Lead and supervise campers in activities at camp including but not limited to songs, teambuilding challenges, group activities, challenges, etc.
  • Teach and lead campers at workshops or during other components at camp (table setting, song leading, etc.)
  • Mentor and give guidance to campers to encourage positive youth development and enhancement of life skills

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Teens (age 14 by camp time) are invited to apply for 4-H Camp Counselor positions
  • Teens are needed for all of these camps. You can help with one or all three (based on age)
  • Cloverbud Day Camp at Camp Hervida       June 28                    No Charge
  • Beginner Camp at Camp Hervida                 June 29-30              $20 registration fee
  • Junior Camp at Camp Hervida                     July 5-9                     $40 registration fee
  • Senior Camp at Camp Hervida                     July 19-23                 $40 registration fee
  • Space Adventure Camp at Marietta College      TBD                     No Charge

TO APPLY:

  • Complete the application in its entirety, including the video (2 mins maximum)
  • Provide reference link to two non-family members. (First Time Applicants Only)
  • Read and sign the Standards of Behavior, Camp Cell Phone Policy, and Camp Counselor Code of Conduct forms.
  • Submit application, sign up for an interview (1st and 1 Year Experience Counselors) by Friday, March 5

The online application includes questions about your interest to be a camp counselor, which camps you want to help with, activities you want to help with, etc. The online application requires you and a parent/guardian to sign a code of conduct/policies and requires you to upload a photo of yourself and a short video (2 minutes max.) about why you want to be a camp counselor, describe your experience working with kids at camp or elsewhere, and a fun fact about yourself!

4-H Year-end Celebration – Sunday, November 15

We normally have an ice cream social and celebration to recognize our 4-H members that have won project pins, special pins and trip awards as well as special community awards and volunteer tenure awards.

This year we are planning a 4-H Drive Thru Celebration on Sunday, November 15 from 1 – 2 pm in the OSU Extension parking lot.

Recognition will include:

  • Cloverbud Graduation
  • Volunteer Tenure Recognition (1, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 50, 74)
  • Club Awards – honor clubs, club scrapbook Awards, C. Wagner Community Service Awards (Club’s should send a representative)
  • Project Pins Awards
  • Special Pin Awards
  • Trip Award Scholarships
  • Margaret Meredith Leadership Award

Members and clubs receiving awards will receive a postcard invite prior to the November 15 event. Pictures will be taken of the award winners!

All videos and pictures will be posted by Thursday, November 19 for viewing.

State Achievement Form Workshop – Nov 14

On November 14, 2020, Teen Leadership Council will be hosting their second Achievement Form Workshop on Zoom from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

This workshop is specifically for those teens who have already started/previously completed their Achievement Record Form and would like feedback. Teens who RSVP will receive individualized coaching from individuals who are experienced and have had success in submitting their Achievement Record at the state level.

Timeline for County 4-H Awards & Trips – Due Oct 12

Trip Award Clarification for 2020 winners: since the winners of these trips were not able to attend due to Covid and the cancellation of all state & national camps, 2020 trip winners will have first choice to attend the camp in 2021 as long as they still meet the age requirements for the camp. 2020 winners DO NOT NEED to complete another awards application unless you want to be eligible for a different trip or apply for Pin Awards.

2021 CWF & LWF Announcement: Both of these events will be virtual for 2021

Timeline:

October 12                   Member’s application due to Extension Office.  Extension Office removes names and adds numbers to applications to provide an anonymous packet for the Awards Selection Committee to review.

October 26                      Awards Selection Committee reviews applications and selects Project Pin and Special Pin Award Winners.

October 26                      Trip Committee interviews applicants and selects winners for 4-H Trips and Margaret Meredith award.

Early November          Award winners invited to attend the 4-H Year Celebration.

November 19                 4-H Year Celebration – Plans are still underway for this event and how it will be conducted. It will not be an in-person event for 2020

OSU Extension Internship Position – Suspended for 2020

The program is suspended for 2020 – OSU Extension will be working on the program for the future and plans to have a program ready to go for Summer 2021.  They will notify anyone who has applied. 

Applications will be accepted from now until April 1 for the Summer Internship Program http://go.osu.edu/OSUEinternships

A paid internship is available in Extension Area 19 (Covering Washington, Morgan, Perry, Muskingum Counties). Interns will work June 13 through August 12, 2020. While each area/location has a unique focus, work during the internship might include:

  • Working closely with a local OSU Extension educators as they teach classes or works with volunteers
  • Planning, helping or teaching community classes, day camps, field days or fairs
  • Attending meetings with community leaders and volunteers
  • Developing news articles, exhibits, brochures, marketing materials, and resources for educational curriculum
  • Using social media and technology to share research-based information
  • Participating in field research, helping with literature reviews, and testing new methods and curriculum
  • Working with youth through 4-H activities, county fair, camps and project judging

Ohio 4-H College Scholarships – Due Feb 15

Ohio 4-H recognizes and rewards individual excellence, whether it is in project work, leadership, citizenship or community service. Ohio 4-H Scholarships were established in 1976 in order to help young people become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. In addition to the scholarships listed below, individual counties may also offer county-based scholarships. To qualify for the scholarships below you must fill out the college scholarship application through the CFAES website by February 15.

Attend Any Accredited Post Secondary Institution

  • All American Youth Horse Show Foundation 4-H Scholarship. Provides scholarships to Ohio high school seniors and current Ohio 4-H horse members enrolling at any accrediated Ohio post secondary institution in any course of study.
  • Mary E. Border Ohio 4-H Scholarship. Income provides scholarships at the University or other accredited universities for incoming freshmen or undergraduates who were 4-H members or advisors.
  • Farm Credit Services of Mid America. Provides scholarships to students studying agribusiness or economics.

Attend The Ohio State University – Any Major

  • Dr. and Mrs. Vernon Glick Bolender, Jr. 4-H Scholarship. Income is used to provide an undergraduate need-based scholarship/s to a student who is a member of Ohio 4-H with preference given to those from Pickaway County, Ohio.
  • George W. Broughton 4-H Scholarship. Provides schoalrships for current or former 4-H members who enrolled at OSU with first preference given to a student from Washington County, Ohio. Second preference is for students from Athens, Belmont, Gallia, Guernsey, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, or Noble counties in Ohio.
  • Ashley Brittany Calhoon 4-H Scholarship. Provides scholarships forstudents who have been active in 4H.
  • William E. Goos Memorial Scholarship. Provides scholarships for students who are memebrs of 4-H. First preference is for Butler County.
  • Pfeiffer, Miller, and Saunway Family 4-H Scholarship. Used to provide at least one undergraduate scholarship to a current or former 4-H member who had demonstrated excellence in community service, leadership and public speaking.
  • The Vaughan Family 4-H Scholarship Fund. Provides support to an incoming first year student with preference to students with demonstrated need who have participated in 4-H in Crawford County.

Attend The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences

  • Ramona Alvarez & Butler County 4-H Scholarship. Undergraduate scholarship to an incoming freshman at The Ohio State University. Qualified candidates must be from Butler County & current or former 4-H members. First preference for female students.
  • Bob Evans Farms Scholarship. Provides scholarships for entering freshmen in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
  • The Albert F. and Margaret E. Gehres 4-H Fund. Income supports scholarships for current or former 4-H members
  • AB Graham Leaders of Tomorrow 4-H Scholarship. Provides at least one annual scholarship for Ohio 4-H members and/or alumni who have demonstrated excellence in community service and leadership and have been enrolled in the Ohio 4-H programs for a minimum of 3 years with preference given to applicants who are involved in innovative and non-traditional programs and/or programs that emphasize leadership and preference for entering freshmen.
  • The J. Lyndon Johnson Scholarship. Provides scholarships for current or former Ohio 4-H or Ohio FFA members with a minimum of 3 years participation and a farming background.
  • Charles & Gwyenna Lifer 4-H Scholarship. Provides scholarships for first year students with a major in the area of agriculture or natural resources. Preference given to those from Richland, Knox, and Monroe counties.
  • Tiney and Helen McComb Family 4-H Scholarship. Supports current or former 4-H member with at least two years of participation in 4-H, majoring in areas of business, finance, or economics in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences or in The Max M. Fisher College of Business.
  • Pike County R.O. McFerren Scholarship. Used to award scholarships to entering freshmen from Pike County enrolled in majors in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at the Columbus campus or the Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster.
  • Carl Meads Memorial 4-H Scholarship.  Supports current or former members of Ohio 4-H with at least 5 years participation and have shown cattle for at least 3 years.  Preference shall be given to those majoring in Animal Science.
  • 4-H Ohio Township Scholarship. Provides scholarships for current or former 4-H members.
  • Pike County 4-H Scholarship. Used to award a scholarship in honor of Vancil Brown to 4-H members from Pike County Ohio
  • John L. Ryant Memorial 4-H Agriculture Scholarship. Provides scholarships for an incoming freshman preferably from Delaware County, who is a current or former 4-H member and who has demonstrated qualities of leadership.
  • Paul A. & Ethel I. Smith 4-H Scholarship. Provides scholarships for students studying a farming or other agriculture-related discipline.

Attend The Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology

  • Bea Cleveland 4-H Scholarship. Provides scholarships for first year students enrolled in the College of Education and Human Ecology.
  • Mabel Sarbaugh 4-H Scholarship. Provides scholarships for first year students in the College of Education and Human Ecology.
  • Alga D. “Peg” Weaver 4-H Scholarship. Provides scholarships for first year students in the College of Education and Human Ecology.

Collegiate Level Scholarships

  • Cunningham 4-H Leadership Scholarship. Income supports leadership development programs and activities that recognize outstanding leadership among older and/or former 4-H members who are student leaders.
  • Arthur F. Bell & William J. Hoewischer Agricultural 4-H Scholarship.  Provides scholarships for students from Shelby or Muskingum County, Ohio in good academic standing who have participated in 4-H for at least 5 years. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular activities.
  • Jonard Family Scholarship. Provides support for students from Jefferson, Harrison or Delaware counties in Ohio who participate in 4-H programs.
  • John T. Mount 4-H Achievement Award. Provides scholarships for current or former 4-H members.

4-H Personal Development Scholarship Applications – due March 2

Thinking about continuing your education or attending a certification program? Then you might want to apply for a personal development scholarship!

Scholarship Guidelines:

  1. Applicants must be at least a high school senior, high school graduate, Washington County 4-H Alumni OR current Washington County 4-H Volunteer.
  2. Applicants must have been involved in the Washington County 4-H Program a minimum of three years as a member or volunteer.
  3. The purpose of this scholarship is to reimburse applicants for expenses incurred for further training or technical education. Reimbursable expenses include: books, tools, supplies, tuition, school fees, continuing education fees, room & board, etc.
  4. Scholarship winners will be required to provide a copy of receipts to be reimbursed. Funds must be claimed by July 1, 2021.
  5. The Washington County 4-H Advisory Committee will award four $250 scholarships.
  6. Awardees will be notified by April 1st.
