County Fair Livestock Sale Checks – Pickup Oct 2 & 3

Checks will no longer be mailed. On October 2, 2022 between 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm and October 3, 2022 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm at the Senior Fair Board Office, 922 Front St, Marietta. This change is being made due to the necessity to collect an IRS W-9 form.

Further explanation why a W-9 is needed by all county fair livestock sale participants.

To be compliant with IRS requirements, the Fair Board is required to file 1099 MISC for anyone who sells their project for $600 or more.  To file these forms, the County Fairboard is required to have a completely filled-out W-9 for each person going through the livestock sale. This form also helps as an aid to the youth in preparing their tax return.  The proper reporting of this income on a tax return does not mean that they will have to pay any income tax, just that a return may be required.

The following is a paragraph from IRS Publication 225 found on page 75 of the 2020 edition explaining the reporting of 4-H projects:

4-H Club or FFA project. If an individual participates in a 4-H Club or National FFA Organization (FFA) project, any net income received from sales or prizes related to the project may be subject to income tax. Report the net income as “Other income” on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 8. If necessary, attach a statement showing the gross income and expenses. The net income may not be subject to SE tax if the project is primarily for educational purposes and not for profit, and is completed by the individual under the rules and economic restrictions of the sponsoring 4-H or FFA organization. Such a project is generally not considered a trade or business. For information on the filing requirements and other tax information for dependents, see Pub. 929.
