Take the Leap: Career Readiness Day – ages 13 to 18

Thanks to a grant from the Ohio 4-H Foundation, Ohio 4-H  will again be hosting “Take the Leap: Career Readiness Day” on Saturday, April 2, 2022 (12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center! This event is open to any 4-H member – ages 13 to 18 – and is completely FREE! Several Teen Leadership Council members have been planning this event and are excited to facilitate this opportunity for their peers.

This day is jam-packed full of opportunities for participants with some highlights listed here:

  • Learn about 4-H opportunities at the state level
  • Rotate through career preparation workshops covering topics such as resume writing, interview skills, entrepreneurship, goal setting, and more
  • Network with peers who are also interested in preparing for their future

OSU Extension to Host 2022 East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference

Ohio State University (OSU) Extension will host the 2022 Annual East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference on Friday, March 25 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum, 3266 Dyewood Road SW, Carrollton, OH 44615. All women and young women (high school age) who are interested, involved in, or want to become involved with food, agricultural, or natural resources production or small business are encouraged to attend.

East Ohio Women in Ag Conference 2022 Flyer

The conference program features a networking fair and sixteen breakout sessions presented by OSU Extension educators, producers, and partner agencies. Sessions this year are focused around four themes: Natural Resources, Plants & Animals, Home & Family, and Special Interest (includes break-out with Ohio FFA State Officers). The conference keynote will be led by Bridget Britton, OSU Extension Behavioral Health Field Specialist. She and her team will lead participants through “Stoic or Stressed? Talking through difficult topics in a safe space.”

Registered participants, community organizations, or businesses interested in sponsorship can contact 740-461-6136.

Interested individuals can register for the conference online at go.osu.edu/eowia2022. Cost of the conference is $55 for adult participants and $30 for students.  Conference fee includes conference participation, breakfast, lunch, and conference handouts. Deadline for registration is Friday, March 11.

Bulls Eye Shooting Sports – Needing Instructors

Washington County Bull’s Eye 4-H Club offers a series of sessions in the Spring and Fall at 4-H Camp Hervida. There are nine disciplines offered in Ohio that adults can become certified in to then be offered at the local level:

  • Archery
  • Hunting & Wildlife
  • Living History
  • Muzzleloader
  • Pistol
  • Reloading
  • Rifle
  • Shotgun
  • Western Heritage

Some of these disciplines are not offered in Washington County due the lack of certified volunteers to teach the sessions at Bull’s Eye club meetings.

Do you have an interest in Shooting Sports and teaching young people about safety, self-discipline, goal-setting while teaching a lifetime sport?

Consider joining the Bull’s Eye 4-H Club as an instructor. Here are the steps:

  1. Become a local 4-H volunteer by contacting the OSU Extension Office 740-376-7431
  2. Talk to our Bull’s Eye Coordinators Teresa Stone or Misty Mason about getting plugged in to the club.
  3. Attend a state training to become certified. We will pay for your registration fee!
    • Feb 25-27 at Camp Ohio, registration due Feb 13
    • April 8-10 at Canter’s Cave
    • October 8-10 at Canter’s Cave

Scholarship Money for Training, Classes, Books, etc.

Thinking about continuing your education or attending a certification program? Then you might want to apply for a personal development scholarship!

Scholarship Guidelines:

  1. Applicants must be at least a high school senior, high school graduate, Washington County 4-H Alumni OR current Washington County 4-H Volunteer.
  2. Applicants must have been involved in the Washington County 4-H Program a minimum of three years as a member or volunteer.
  3. The purpose of this scholarship is to reimburse applicants for expenses incurred for further training or technical education. Reimbursable expenses include: books, tools, supplies, tuition, school fees, continuing education fees, room & board, etc.
  4. Scholarship winners will be required to provide a copy of receipts to be reimbursed. Funds must be claimed by July 1, 2023.
  5. The Washington County 4-H Advisory Committee will award four $250 scholarships.
  6. Awardees will be notified by April 1st.

4-H College Scholarship Applications Due – March 1

Washington County 4-H College Scholarship for 2022!!

Scholarship Guidelines:

  1. Applicants must have been enrolled and in good standing (completed projects) in Washington County 4-H Program at least three years.
  2. Applicants must attach a letter of acceptance (if available) from the college you are planning to attend Fall 2022. Can be any accredited associates or bachelors program.
  3. Applicants must be a high school senior or college freshman at the time of application.
  4. Include a current photo with the application. (Senior picture preferred)
  5. The Washington County 4-H Advisory Committee will award three $500 college scholarships.
  6. Scholarships are not renewable and will be a one-time recipient.
  7. Awardees will be notified by April 1st.

Funds Available to attend Forestry-Wildlife Camp

Who Can Come? 
This camp is for all youth ages 12 – 18
How to Apply by March 21
4-H members can write a short paragraph (200 words or less) about “Why You Would Like to Attend Forestry-Wildlife Camp”. Mail or email the paragraph to zimmer.2@osu.edu or mail it to the OSU Extension Office, 1115 Gilman Ave, Marietta, OH 45750 by March 21.
Fees and Expenses 
The Washington County 4-H Advisory Committee has budgeted funds for a minimum of 3 youth to attend. Participants will pay 20% ($11 or $21) of the registration fee depending upon when the member registers.
Camp Information

Gallia County is excited to offer the 2022 Forestry – Wildlife Camp at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp again this year. This is the fourth year for this unique camp, which specializes in environmental education! Camp participants will get to try new and exciting challenges, learn about and appreciate the natural world around them, while meeting experts in the field of Forestry and Wildlife Conservation.

Dates & Times Camp
Friday, April 22, check-in is from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM please do not arrive before 7 PM and please plan to eat dinner before your arrival. We will be cooking our evening snack around the campfire so please be sure to list any food allergies on the health forms.
Camp will dismiss on Sunday, April 24 at 11:30am.
Health & Safety
A medical professional is on duty 24 hours a day in case of illness or injury. Each participant must bring completed health forms with them to camp. These must be completed, signed by a parent or guardian. All medications must be checked in with the camp nurse in the original container, regardless of whether it is a prescription or over-the-counter medication. Accident insurance is included in the camp fee. Temperatures will be taken at check-in and anyone running a high fever will be referred to the camp nurse.
Camp Location & Information Canters Cave is located about 6 miles northwest of Jackson on Rt. 35. Turn at the Canter’s Cave sign and continue about 1 mile. The camp entrance will be on your left.

Mary Ann Mitchell to be Honored at Ohio 4-H Conference

Washington County 4-H Volunteer Mary Ann Mitchell will be honored on March 12 at the Ohio 4-H Conference with the 2022 Meritorious Service Award. Mary Ann is a 46 year volunteer that gives because she wants to help provide opportunities for learning and growth for the youth in Washington County. Mary Ann Mitchell has served as a club advisor for the Thundering Hoofs 4-H club, and served on our Washington County 4-H Saddle Horse Committee. Mary Ann is a very active volunteer where she helps to organize educational equine session, PAS Shows and assists with the County Fair and our local independent fair as well. Mary Ann has a love of horses and shares that passion with the young members of our organization.

Registration to attend the conference is due Friday, February 11.

The 4-H Advisory Committee provides funds to cover the registration fee, however a $10 commitment fee is required.
