Ohio 4-H Conference Report

Congratulations to Charlotte Wagner, advisor with the Lowell Lively Lassies & Lads as she was inducted into the Ohio 4-H Hall of Fame and Jeremiah’s Coffee House honored as an Ohio Friend of 4-H. What a wonderful opportunity to recognize the work of our local folks on the state level.

Also, thanks to all that attended the event and represented Washington County!

Quality Assurance Session #1 – March 19 at Waterford High School

March 19 from 7-9 pm at Waterford High School is the first QA session. Members planning to take market livestock and lactating dairy cattle/goats projects and a parent/guardian must attend a Livestock Quality Assurance training in order to participate in Jr Fair events, shows and sales at the fairs. Members may attend a QA session in any Ohio county, the member must still be accompanied by an adult.

Test-out Option – Youth ages 12-14 and 15-18 may participate.  The test will be offered after each QA session. Pre-registration is required by calling the Extension Office at 740-376-7431

OHIO CHEVIOT BREEDERS STARTER FLOCK AWARD

The Ohio Cheviot Breeders Association (OCBA) is seeking applicants for the Jim Cluff Memorial Starter Flock Award.

The OCBA started the contest in 1994 to award a Cheviot starter flock to an Ohio youth up to 17 years of age. The purpose of the award is to introduce the youth to the enjoyment of raising and owning a purebred Cheviot sheep, as well as encouraging the growth of new Cheviot breeders in Ohio.

The contest winner will receive the following: a one-year membership in the OCBA, one bred ewe the first year, one ram the second year and in the third year the youth will donate a lamb to continue the award.

FREE – ExploreAg Camps Being Offered at OSU

Attention high school students! Teens interested in agricultural careers don’t want to miss this amazing and FREE opportunity to spend a week on a college campus exploring the world of agricultural careers. Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports State Championship/Shotgun Competition

Announcing the 2019 Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports State Championship/Shotgun Competition. This competition is open to all Ohio 4-H members enrolled in any 4-H Shooting Sports discipline and age 13 as of 1/1/2019. Youth must meet all Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports requirements, including but not limited to, being knowledgeable and proficient in the safe use of the equipment and knowledgeable of the general rules of the event. The event is April 13, 2019 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio and only includes a shotgun competition this year (additional disciplines will be added annually). The cost to register is $40 by April 5th and $50 late registration/day of event. All targets are provided but members will be responsible to supply their own firearm and ammunition. The competition serves as part of the selection process for the 2020 Ohio 4-H Shotgun Team that will compete at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Competition held in Grand Island, Nebraska. Youth ages 13-17 as of 1/1/19 are eligible for the team. Those youth age eighteen as of 1/1/2019 can compete for awards but not for selection to the 2020 State Team.

Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Saddle Horse Committee

The Washington County Saddle Horse Committee is hosting an Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast on March 23, 2019 from 8am to 10am.  Tickets are a $5 donation and may be purchased from 4-H Horse Project members, any Saddle Horse Committee member, or contact Kathryn Hartline at the Extension Office at 740-376-7431.  Funds raised from the event will help with awards, equine sessions, PAS shows and other horse event related expenses.
