Module 4: Web-Enhanced Reading and Study Strategies

The part of the notes I found most interesting and helpful was part 1, the active reading passage. The top 3 things I found was how to underline and highlight, online reading effectively, and lastly the SQ3R method of reading.
The reason I chose this is because it applies to me and most of my classes. As a student talking to another student, I’m going to share the most important ways for you to be successful following some of the strategies I learned and use from the lesson on module 4. First, I’m going to start with the SQ3R method of reading. This stands for skim, question, read, review recite and review. I actually learned this method my freshman year of college and I often refer to it when I really need it. The problem for me is that this takes a lot of time to finish. I find myself reading many times for class and having no idea what I just read. When I tell myself to use this method, I tend to retain the information better. The skimming part is for paragraph heads, bolded words, etc. From there you form questions that you can think of off first glance. Next you actually read through the information, after that you recite and answer some of the questions you formulated beforehand. Lastly you review your notes, your questions and the passage and rewrite things to make them clear.
The last two topics I want to touch on are active reading online and underlining/highlighting things. The main part of this is not to highlight or underline everything. Take the time to read and highlight important things or phrases. Refrain from highlighting entire sentences or definitions. Only highlight the things that have connections and really click for you. Use the margins to take notes, draw pictures, and write down questions. All this will allow you to be a better reader
