For our International Affairs Scholars class my classmates and I were put into groups in order to study the Millenium goals that were put forth by the European Union. My group’s specific goal was to halt the spread of diseases such as AIDS, HIV and malaria. The region we chose to study was India because it has such a high population of people living in poverty, and we knew that poverty goes hand in hand with sickness. That is definitely the case in India, where basic medicine generally costs the equivalent of hundreds of American dollars. Based on our research we learned that lots of progress has been made, through the creation of various programs, in halting and also reducing the amount of HIV and AIDS in India. We also learned that there’s still much work to be done.
