My G.O.A.L.S.
- Global Awareness: Diversity and global awareness are very important values that I plan to implement within my studies. I am a Morrill Scholar and therefore very involved with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. This community has already been an amazing influence within my time at college and I plan to remain as involved as I possibly can. Additionally, global history is important to understand the world currently. First semester I am studying Latin to be able to better understand some of the early civilizations, their similarities to our current society, and what effects they have caused on today’s global community.
- Original Inquiry: I had not planned to be involved with much research in college but the seminar class that I am taking first semester has changed my mind. During this class we have discussed the value that research in college has for students. The final project for this class is a research based species analysis that has taught me a lot about research and its value to an undergraduate. Being able to see the research conducted by our TA and the work lead by our professor was genuinely interesting to me in ways that just reading about research opportunities was not.
- Academic Enrichment: As an English major, I did not want to have to give up any of the interests I have in math or science. This has lead me to pursue a minor in a math or science, although I don’t know what one yet. Math and science have always interested me but I do not want to go into a career that is STEM focussed. By majoring in English, something I love, and minoring in a math or science, things that academically interest me, I believe I have found a balance.
- Leadership Development: So far I am involved with The Study and Wellness Club, the Exploration Learning Community, and the Morrill Scholars. These groups have helped me to become involved with a diverse group of people that help me better understand how to respect and interact with everyone. I believe that my leading style is to listen and learn from whoever I am leading and using my position to help them achieve the goals set by the group or the individual.
- Service Engagement: The Morrill Scholar program is currently the most service oriented group that I am involved with. Their commitment to social justice and equality in many different communities is something that I deeply admire. I hope to be able to join one of the many service trips during my time in college.
