How Adults Learn

Through an assignment at my previous employer that involved communicating major changes in how work was to be accomplished, I became interested in how adults learn in general and on the job in particular. After completing a doctoral program in workforce development and education, I’ve gained some insight into my questions. The word cloud above depicts research questions I’ve asked during the past 10 years. It also contains the answers.

Adults learn through discussion, coaching, and feedback, among other methods. Where technology is involved, the idea of presence is fundamental. Presence is how we convey our personalities online, how we take ownership of our learning, and how we collaborate with others to integrate ideas and produce an outcome greater than what we could have produced individually. Effective instructional design promotes learning that results in worthwhile outcomes and learner satisfaction.

ADDIE graphicThe following pages provide insight into how I’ve designed learning activities for adults. Using ADDIE guidance as an organizing mechanism, I present a sample of my work in analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.
