Description: It is the article for the assignment Personal Profile. This is my personal profile. Through this article, you can know my hobbies, hometown, study plan and reasons why I choose OSU.
Who I am
I am Kangyu Wang, a Chinese freshman. You can call me Franck or Coin. My favorite sports are jogging, badminton and walking. However, I am not good at the former two. Except for Tuesday, I get up at 06:30 and start to jog at 07:00 in the everyday morning (I have to thank my roommate for his courses at 08:00 a.m.). I usually play badminton from 08:00 to 10:30 in the evening. I know that there are some people, such as my American roommate, who query walking as a sport. They think that most people walk a lot everyday so it is just a common action. However, if you walk 20 kilometers, 30 kilometers or even a longer distance, you will believe that walking is not only a common action but also a sport. My best record is 48.32 kilometers. It took me about 10 hours. Besides these three sports, I love travels and delicacies. I have been to South Korea, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Burma and numbers of cities in China. It is really exciting to enjoy different cultures and delicious food.

Where I come from
My hometown is Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, China. In Yiwu, there are not beautiful sceneries for the tourism, valuable lodes for the mining industry or fertile soil for the agriculture. However, there is the world’s largest small-commodity market. The municipal government annually holds kinds of expositions, such as the China Yiwu International Forest Products Exposition, China International Tourism Commodities Fair, China Yiwu International Commodity Fair and so on. What’s more, the 8th APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Technology Conference was held in Yiwu. During expositions, thousands of people come from all over the world and join. However, Yiwu is just a small city in the middle part of Zhejiang Province. A province in China seems like a state in America. Zhejiang Province is famous in China for the economy, the culture and natural resources. It is one of the most economically active areas, one of the biggest light industry gathering places and one of the most important e-business centers in China. It is also one of the birthplaces of ancient Chinese civilization, one of ancient capitals in Chinese history and “the land of fish and rice”. Nevertheless, Zhejiang Province is just a part of the southeast coastal area and one of 34 provincial administrative regions in China. China is famous all over the world for its colorful culture, long history and vast territory. In China, there are 56 nationalities, 8 main styles of cooking, more than 80 local languages and about 30 kinds of local words. What’s more, this huge country is one of the four great ancient civilizations with a longer than 6000-year history and more than 9600000-square-kilometer territory. I sincerely invite you to my home country and my hometown.

What I want to learn
My major is physics now but I may change my major into the mechanical engineering or the engineering physics. The reason why I plan to change my major is that I want to improve the degree of applying physics theories. There are many physics theories noticed but not used. For example, most people see the 3-D movies as a symbol of the high-level technology. However, the main physics theory applied into the 3-D movies is the polarization which is just a very simple and foundational theory in optics, an important branch of the physics. But, in optics, many senior theories, such as the wave-particle duality of the light, have been noticed but are mentioned only in textbooks and test paper. It seems like that there are thousands of hungry men with a lot of original materials of food but there is only one cook with a small cooker. The physics theories, “the original material of food,” are valuable and meaningful only when they are “cooked.” If no physicist or engineer, the “cook”, applies physics theories into creating new productions or technologies, they are just collections of concepts. For example, the wave-particle duality of the light, a unused theory that photons exhibit the properties of both particles and waves, is just an addition of concepts, such as defined words “photon”, “particle” and “wave”, into a sentence which works nothing but points out a fact. However, what people need and want is now technologies or products, “finished food,” to solve problems, “the hunger” and make people’s life or the whole world better rather than just numbers of concepts. What I want to learn is the way to become a “cook” or to make the “cooker” bigger and more efficient. By the way, I have to solve my English problems firstly.

Why I choose the OSU
What I want to learn is one of the main reasons why I choose the Ohio State University. The university is pretty good at both the physics and engineering. Great courses of the physics and the engineering are so important to me. What’s more, I can get help from many groups, such as the academic service center, the study group and so on. Another main reason why I choose the Ohio State University is that there are complete and sufficient supplies for students’ daily life. In this huge campus, there are restaurants and dining halls, gyms and RPAC, hospitals and Wilce Student Health Center …… It is not only a university but also a residential area. It is famous for not only the academic but also the activities after the class. For example, I am a member of the student club Ohio State University Tzu Chi Youth Buddhist Compassion Relief Organization, a chapter of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi America Collegiate Network. Although I am not a Buddhist, I am glad to take part in it because most activities in this club are to help others rather than meaningless meetings. What’s more, through these meaningful activities, I can directly see many serious problems in current society and impressively notice which products or technologies people need and want.
End
No matter who I am, where I come from, what I want to learn and why I choose the OSU, the first thing I have to do is to improve my English. It is difficult for me but it is also essential for me. Go Buckeye!
