Best Asynchronous Communication Platforms

Buckeye Box

BuckeyeBox is a cloud storage system that is accessible to Ohio State students and faculty. Files can be shared through BuckeyeBox for classes, project teams or any other purpose. Its advantage is that it is a more secure platform than other storage platforms. However, for other Ohio State projects it may be difficult to share files, because of this.

DropBox

Dropbox is a hub for storage and sharing. Within dropbox users can share large files with other users. For example, users can upload excerpts of readings to share with others. Large amounts of photos can be shared for projects. A disadvantage of drop box is that it is harder to use on mobile devices. Mobile devices, excluding lap tops, such as cell phones can’t handle larger files as efficiently as a computer could. Although still usable on a mobile platform, it’s not practical. Compared to other cloud storage software there’s less ease of use. However, it’s still a great resource for students to share large files.

Google Drive

Google drive is an excellent, asynchronous communication resource. Google drives are connected to a gmail account, google calendar, google maps and other outlets of self and group communication.  Google drive as a stand alone is a great resource. Within google drive users can create folders for documents and explore shared documents. Google spread sheets, documents and slides can be created for projects. Whether it’s a presentation, report or data lay out. All can be utilized to communicate asynchronously and if desired synchronously as well. All files save automatically and your account is connected to other facets of google services for ease of use. A lot of storage space can be taken advantage of as well. However, for personal storage different accounts may wish to be used to avoid disorganization.
