Time and Change Will Surely Show

It already feels like I’ve experienced so much here at OSU, and in such a short time! Looking back, if I had to focus on one aspect of my life that has changed dramatically since coming to OSU, I would say that now I am much more comfortable recognizing how diverse my interests are. I came to OSU under the assumption that my options were limited to Physics or some other STEM field and that I would not be exploring other careers adequately, but that was not the case; rather, every day I have been able to focus on keeping my options open and giving myself time to grow. With all of the flexibility in my Gen Ed options and how I spend my day, I’ve finally been able to start the process of truly deciding what it is that I enjoy doing. Developing friendships with professors and investing myself in classes like Honors Russian Lit has really opened my eyes to what I might enjoy in the future. Moreover, events like Hack OHI/O–that were, admittedly, a bit uncomfortable–turned out to be awesome confidence boosters and exploratory experiences. I walked in knowing only a little bit of C++, and somehow ended up winning a challenge, making new friends, and creating a project worth continuing. I feel much more confident in making the most of my 4 years here now that I have (mostly) made it through the shock of the transition.

While recognizing that I have so many options is in part a great relief and something I take pride in, it also means I have quite the difficult decision to make when I decide what future path I want to take in life. I hope that as the year progresses, I am able to refine these broad interests and find my niche in the world. Can’t wait to see what becomes of the rest of my time here!

About Me

Hi, I’m Matthew, and this is my first year at Ohio State. I’m majoring in Physics at the moment, but my interests are spread far and wide: I enjoy learning about anything from philosophy to Russian literature, and I am always seeking new things to obsess over. I love conversing with others and sharing my opinions, but also keeping an open mind in all aspects of life. Some of my other hobbies include environmentalism, violin and piano performance, as well as astrophotography.

Will update as the year goes on.
