Excited for last day of class today it has been a fun and interesting class. It was also good to have teachers who care for their students to and actually want them to succeed.

I thought todays lecture by professor Birkenholz was one of the best of the year. What I liked most about the lecture was how he explained how going to a big University like this opens your eyes and helps you to experience different things. I could not agree more for me it was like a whole new experience coming to school here after living on a farm. When I go home I talk and look at my friends and it is like they basically never left high school and either went to a small college near home or didn’t attend college.

Diversity is important especially at a University like Ohio State. For one it encourages people of diverse backgrounds to come here and helps them to feel comfortable. It also brings people of all different backgrounds and helps students understand that not everything is the same. Having teachers of different backgrounds is also good as well because they will bring different teaching styles to students as well.

We did our oral book reports today in class and I found a bunch of the different books from class interesting. For one almost all the books in class were unique and had different perspectives on leadership. I still believe I had the best book in class because it dealt with coach K and his views on leadership a lot of the other authors I didn’t know.

Writing my final paper for this class has given me a lot of insight about myself and about leadership. I am also happy I took this class because my brother interviewed for an internship and they said his interview skills weren’t quite good enough and they told him to take a leadership class or join a club related to it. That makes me thankful that I took this class because one it got me into groups with other students and helped me with interpersonal skills, two it taught me a new subject which broadened my knowledge about leadership, three it helped me learn more about my strengths and weaknesses, and finally it also helped me as a writer with all the writing I did, so all in all I believe having this leadership class on my resume will help be get a job and be successful.

A problem I had last year was in math class. I am awful in math and have to work for my grade every time, last semester I had to pass to move to make to the next math class. The problem was my grades were borderline and I was not sure if I was going to pass. After I realized the problem I set aside study time every night no matter what to study math and do problems from the book, then I got help from math tutors who taught me the formulas along with the notes I would take. Finally when I put all that work together with the studying and formulas I was able to raise my grade to a C and pass the class.

Went over problem solving in class today thought there was a bunch of good ways to get class attendance up. I think taking attendance would be the best way for attendance to go up. If points are taken for attendance that would make kids go to class because if they didn’t their grade would be negatively effected. Attendance works in the classes I am in because it can raise their grade if they attend.

Last week our guest speaker went into a lot of detail about leadership and emotions. A lot of what he said had to deal with deep thinking and broad concepts as well. The most interesting part of the lecture to me was when he talked about what separates men and women. He talked about how women are usually much more emotional than men and men are much more assertive than women. It was also said that emotional awareness doe not rank very high among men. I agreed with what he said woman can be tough, but in my experiences woman usually show more emotion than men.

The star method stands for situation, task, action, result and is a type of job interviewing technique. The situation part has to do with a recent situation about you and how you handled it. The task part has to do with what you are trying to achieve in the future and in certain situations. Action has to do with how you handled the situation and what you did to handle. Result is finally what the result of your actions in that particular situation.

This week our book reports were do and I found the book I chose by legendary coach K to be a very good read. I liked how he took a lot of different pieces out his life and how he handled them and used leadership. He also had many different chapters in his book about character and other qualities that make up a good leader. In the book he also talked about his mentor coach Bobby Knight and his influences I found it fascinating that they were so close but there leadership styles were at opposite ends of the spectrum, Knights was more in your face and strict, while coach K’s is more with the players as their friend and that they always come first.
