Global Awareness: To become a more global and knowledgable student, I plan to participate in a study abroad program in my 4 years of undergrad. The May-mester study-abroad seems like a great opportunity to spend a good amount of time in a mother country learning about their culture and way of life and I would enjoy possibly traveling to a Spanish-speaking country where I could use my Spanish skills while simultaneously learning more about their language, history and culture. I also plan to go on a mission trip through either Med-Life or Buck-I-Serve and travel to an underprivileged third-world country in South America and help the citizens of that country in any way I can.

Original Inquiry: To achieve my goal of Original Inquiry, I plan to get involved  Undergraduate Research on campus. With my major being Biology, I hope to find a research opportunity dealing with human or biological sciences that I can apply to what I am learning in my classes. I hope to achieve Research Distinction with the work I did with my research and possibly present my findings at the Undergraduate Research Forum.

Academic Enrichment: To achieve Academic Enrichment, I plan to participate in the Honors Program all 4 years at Ohio State. I plan to take rigorous Honors courses to continue to challenge myself, and enroll in upper-level classes to prepare myself for med-school. I will continue to work towards a 4.0, even if it is nearly impossible. I am also minoring in Business to take other non-science classes and to better understand other areas of work that will help me in the future with medicine.

Leadership Development: I am currently involved in the Future Health Professions Learning Community, which encourages us to find clubs and leadership opportunities in medicine. I am also a member of Med-Life where I hope to one day hold a leadership position. I hope to one day become a teaching assistant for chemistry or biology, and to join other numerous clubs and extracurricular activities where I can have some impact in the community.

Service Engagement: I am currently training to become a volunteer at a free clinic in Columbus through the club Med-Life where I will help members of the community with their health needs. I am also participating in Buckeyethon and am raising money so that we can give to the people that need it. I am also hoping to become involved in Greek Life and become involved in a philanthropy that gives back to the community and serves those who need it.

Artifacts

Medlife was the first club I joined on Campus and probably the club I am most passionate about. Not only does MedLife sponsor a mission trip to a third-world country to help with the lack of medicine there, but they also do a lot of little projects I have had the pleasure of participating in.

Through MedLife I have been able to make pillows and capes for children in the hospital, and menstrual pads for women in Tanzania to aid in hygiene, but I also have had the opportunity to volunteer at a free clinic in Columbus. Every Monday, a clinic right outside downtown Columbus holds free, walk-in screenings for its’ patients who cannot usually afford annual checkups. Through there I have been given the opportunity to train for many medical tasks and positions I could one day hold in the future. I also can practice general social skills which will be very beneficial for my hopefully future profession as a doctor. I very much enjoy this volunteer work because I am able to help out others while also benefitting myself preparing for my future line of work. I hope to soon return to the clinic to help out other members’ of our community who deserve it.

About Me

Elizabeth is a first year undergraduate student in the Honors College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University. Elizabeth is majoring in Biology and is hoping to minor in Business as well. Before college, Elizabeth graduated from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School near Cleveland, Ohio, where she graduated top 10% of her class, as a member of NHS and 2 year captain of her varsity soccer team. Elizabeth is a member of the Future Health Professions Learning Community, and participates in extracurriculars such as intramural soccer and academic clubs such as MedLife. Outside of school, Elizabeth enjoys playing sports with her friends, watching a wide range of movies and TV shows, and petting as many dogs as possible. In 4 years, she hopes to graduate with Honors, attend Med School after her undergraduate career and to one day become an Anesthesiologist and work for the Cleveland Clinic.

Year in Review: Move-in until November

Coming into my freshman year, I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve been receiving the question of “How is Ohio State living up to your expectations” very often recently, and I have to reply with I didn’t really have any expectations coming in because I knew absolutely nothing about college. Now, I know about college and how it and high school should be considered existing in different galaxies. In high school I was considered pretty over-averagely smart and putting little to no work in to maintain that status, but now having about 3 months of college under my belt, I am no longer the student I was in high school.

The first couple weeks were difficult for my getting used to college, and just how hard it was. I had never struggled in Calculus like I did in college and I had never received a 3 out of 8 on a quiz in my whole high school career. After another 2 out of 8 on a quiz, I realized that I needed to change my ways. At first I was too stubborn and had too much pride to reach out and get help from students or tutors, but from then I have grown as a student and as a scholar and realized that to achieve in college, it is ok to admit that you need help from your professors and peers. I started going to office hours more regularly and went to a couple study groups with kids in my class that knew what they were doing. I had to change my study habits which was hard, and study more intensely and more often for one class than I studied for all my classes combined in high school. I learned how to balance my schedule so that I had time for all of my academics, for my extracurriculars, and for necessary free time and sleep time. It was a rough transition period but from Move-in day to now, I feel like I am a more organized student invested in my grades and in my education.
