“The 1955 Eruption of Kilauea” has sound

This film documents the 1955 eruption of Kilauea from the first opening of fissures in the ground, through the appearance of lava, the formation of cone and flows, the display of lava fountains, and the pillows of rising steam as one lava river reached the sea and set the ocean boiling. It also discusses the difference between Pahoehoe and A’a lava flows.

“Hawaii National Park”

Tourists drive a car into Hawaii National Park and visit scenic points. Shows Kilauea volcano, the forest, ‘Thurston Lava Tube,’ ‘Twin Craters,’ ‘Summer Camp,’ Makaopuha, and Holemaumau. Includes views of a cemetery.

Filmed in 1936, this video has no sound.

Archival footage of Hawaii National Park and Kilauea before the large influx of tourists to the islands by air.  PanAm was the 1st passenger airline in 1935.  Tourism would only grow after that, and Kilauea’s restlessness still draws visitors to watch the “safe” eruptions.
