Ah, the Vinland Map.
Purported to be an early map that acknowledged the Vikings arrival in the New World long before 1492, it was finally discredited in 2018. It is a forgery that foreshadows the truth.
There were many twists and turns that finally landed the map at Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
Proof of the Vikings visit to Newfoundland was confirmed at L’Anse aux Meadows in 1960, three years after the Vinland Map appeared.
However, there is another map that was created in Iceland in 1570 by Sigurd Stefansson that does show the Labrador Peninsula (Markland) & the Great Northern Peninsula (Vinland). Sadly, the original has been lost, but a copy was created in 1690 by Thorlacius, the Bishop of Skalholt and is in the Danish Royal Library. The 1590 Skalholt Map takes partial credit for the discoveries at L’Anse Aux Meadows.
