Recently Old Maps Online added some very cool new features.
Visitors are greeted with an interactive map accompanied by a dynamic timeline. Choose a location and explore how the map changes through the years. Newly added historical context allows the viewer to explore different eras and their political boundaries. Or dive deeper into history with applicable Wikipedia pages.
After choosing a location and date, a list of maps appear on the right. Pick a map and it is correctly oriented and overlaid on the base map. Previously, metadata about the map was shown on the holding institution’s page, but it is now integrated under the document icon. And the 3D feature is a really nice touch!
Click on the History tab on the top left of the map and the TimeMap.org World History Atlas appears. Search either Regions, Rulers, People or Battles and the time slider. Click on Maps to go back.
So, if you have some spare time, drop by Old Maps Online!
