Library of Congress Geography & Map Reading Room

1507 Waldseemuller World Map

If you haven’t dropped into the Library of Congress’ Map Room, you have missed some really great maps. They have scanned numerous individual maps and have also put together some online map exhibitions too.

Presently, there are a couple of physical displays with online access:

Mapping a New Nation: Abel Buell’s Map of the United States, 1784

(The 1st American printed & published map of the New United States.  There are only 7 copies)

Waldseemüller 1507 Map of the World

(The 1st map with the name “America”.  By the way, this is the map at the top of the page)

The Library of Congress has also put together 17 digital collections on map topics of interest.  They include:  “Mapping the National Parks”, “General Maps”, and “Panoramic Maps”

Enjoy!
