First Semester in Review

As the end of my first semester comes to an end, I have learned more about myself in such a short period of time than I have during the rest of my life. Being over 400 miles away from my family and friends has allowed me to mature as a young man. Slowly but surely, I have begun to understand what it is I want out of my life. Of course, on this journey I have a destination in mind, but I am sure that this journey will lead to many different places along the way that will once again change and evolve the way I think. Getting my goals into place and understanding what it takes to achieve what I want to, I have set a plan for next semester and the end of this one, to reach the aforementioned goals.

G.O.A.L.S.

Over the last few years, I have seen my goals for the future change and evolve with the different opportunities and resources afforded to me. I have had life changing experiences and mentors who have helped pave the way for my future here at The Ohio State University and later on in life in whatever endeavors I choose to tackle. Goal setting and strategy have been important to me since the fourth grade when I first set a large goal to conquer, not just achieve. I struggled with writing throughout much of elementary school but through motivation and instruction from my fourth grade teacher, Mr. Campana, I was able to set a goal of where I wanted to be by the time fifth grade, middle school, and high school all rolled around, and sure enough I came, saw, and conquered. Writing quickly became one of my strong suits, and a passion of mine. Furthermore, throughout high school football I set goals for every year. My freshman year I set out to become a starter for the freshman team, and sure enough that is what I did, starting every game. Sophomore year I set the goal of playing varsity special teams and seeing varsity time and lineman. By the end of the season I had accumulated more plays than any other sophomore on the team and had been a substitute for the defensive line. Junior I dubbed my “break out year” and then proceeded to start for my team on both defense and offense, and garnered the respect of coaches within the county as a top notch full back. Senior year was a different story, however, as I was so caught up in the college applications process and SAT preparation that I did not set any goal for myself. Consequently, I had a terrible beginning of the season. Luckily I was able to recover later on in the season and see myself start on offense again, but it is with that experience that I was able to learn the importance of goals and how vital setting them is to success down the road. That is why in every aspect of life I look to set goals and conquer them.

For my first year at Ohio State, I plan on getting a great GPA and establishing professional connections with my professor and advisors to help me later on in college. It is vital for me to obtain the great GPA as I must apply to my major. I plan on getting this GPA by finding better ways to study and establishing strong habits that are conducive to academic success. For the second year, I plan on truly getting involved in the extracurricular activities dipped my toes in (some a lot more than others freshman year, while also continuing to keep up my grades and volunteer. For the summer my goal is to find a solid research opportunity related to my major and to study abroad during my Maymester.  Junior year my goals will be to have continued my previous goals and flourished in them while also having received a solid score on my MCAT. By the end of my four years, I hope to have created a diverse and unique college experience full of great relationships and amazing memories. I also want to have be accepted into a top notch medical school.

For the future, my goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon, and continue to foster and build on my other interests in music production, religion, sports, food, and other interests. To be happy and to have changed the world in my own unique way with my own skills and experiences is also a goal.

Artifacts

One of the greatest artifacts I have in my life is a letter my parents wrote to me in the third grade. The content within the letter is less important than the meaning behind it and the impact it has left on me over the years. My parents do not know that I have kept this letter, and at times over the years since then, have looked back over the letter. The letter basically states how my parents were so proud to see me doing my best in elementary school, and that they would always be proud of me. I was their shining star in their lives as the only child. What they did not realize with the letter is that it would spark a new thinking in my life. It was after that letter that I began to look at the struggle of my parents coming to this country as a immigrants looking to make well on the American Dream. Learning over time the stories of how they have created all that they have with blood, sweat, and tears, I began to gain an appreciation and love for my parents that was beyond any respect I have had for anyone in my life. It is when I reflect on the letter that I think of their hard work, and it motivates me to be just like them: a man of hard work and tenacity, one who will fight no matter what the circumstance is, and one who will always stay true to his morals and dreams.

About Me

Learning to me is best done when a person is thrust into whatever topic he or she wants to learn. Whether it was FL Studio or Xcode, I personally have learned quicker and more efficiently while going through the ins and outs of a program or process on my own and then using content from experts to supplement my own exploration. It is through this I am able to discover my own creativity that is unique to just me. Furthermore, I believe that I as an individual love to absorb knowledge and apply it in everyday use. Most of my learning begins with an infatuation with information. I become heavily engrossed in subject material to the point that I am going beyond what the class material is presenting. For example, this semester in ENGR 1181, we have been learning about MatLab and coding in it. The problems in class were not enough to satisfy my yearning for knowledge. In order to appease this yearning, I went ahead recently, and wrote a program that randomly assigned characters to players of a board game called Avalon that is played in my home town. It allows users to change the number of players playing the game, and randomly delivers character assignments in order to make the initial process of the game easier. This is just one example of how my learning in the classroom translates into larger projects outside of it, and how I solidify all the knowledge I have learned in class.
