Statement of Action

In the upcoming 4 semesters at Ohio State, I plan to finish my academics similar to, if not better than I have started so far, enjoy my time by hanging out with friends and going to football games, volunteering whenever possible to serve others and grow to become a better human being, and lastly, take the MCAT and apply to medical schools to continue my academic growth at a medical school. I plan to take the MCAT during the 2nd semester of my 3rd year and apply during the summer in between my 3rd and 4th years to hopefully start in the autumn after I graduate. I plan to graduate in May of 2024 with a BS in Biochemistry with both an honors and scholars’ designation.

About Me

Hello! My name is Bryson Vogel. I am an undergraduate student at The Ohio State University from Lancaster, Ohio. I am majoring in biochemistry on a premed track, in the hopes of one day becoming a family or sports medicine physician. I would like to do something pertaining to the medical field after I graduate because I have always been fascinated by things that apply to me, like my own body, so it would be interesting to learn more about me and help others along the way. While I am at tOSU, I plan to strive in every way I possibly can but most importantly in my academics. Although making the Dean’s List or being the top of my class would be ideal, I am more focused on obtaining the knowledge I will need to both be successful in my chosen career and be a well-rounded individual. I plan to learn more about my future field of study and how I can make a difference in that field. I enjoy sports so when I am not studying or in class, I am probably watching a football or basketball game, or I am actually playing a sport. I enjoy playing basketball, any sport that involves a frisbee, and spikeball, but I am very athletic and competitive so I will play just about any sport. I have always been a fan of Ohio State athletics but by being an undergraduate student, it adds to that enthusiasm. Therefore, I am a huge fan of any Ohio State athletics program but most especially the football team so Saturdays in the fall are always a big deal. Go Bucks!

Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

In this e-Portfolio, I introduce myself in the About Me page. Here I talk a little about myself and what I plan to accomplish and do at Ohio State and beyond. In the Statement of Action, I expound on this from the perspective of me having just finished half of my schooling with only 2 more years left. I go in depth about when I plan to graduate and what I plan to do afterwards. In my Artifacts tab, I have posted some of the accomplishments I am most proud of and what I have learned from them. I also discuss future accomplishments I plan to achieve and how I will add to the Artifacts tab when I am able to achieve these accomplishments, namely a trip abroad. In the Career tab, I have added a resume with my education, employment, volunteering, and organizations I have been a part of. In the G.O.A.L.S. tab, I have explained how I accomplished or plan to accomplish 3 of the 5 G.O.A.L.S. that are central to being in the scholars program. The 3 I have written about are A (Academic Enrichment), L (Leadership Development), and S (Service Engagement). However, I mention how I might be able to accomplish G (Global Awareness) along with S (Service Engagement). Finally, in my Year in Review tab, I have discussed my previous semesters, classes I have taken during them, and how I have grown as a person and student throughout them. This again, is written from the perspective of me having just finished my 2nd year of college.

Year in Review

This past year has been exciting and stressful. We were finally able to attend classes in person again, and even attend classes in person without a mask. I took difficult classes like ochem and biochem that challenged me in my academic pursuits. I even joined the honors program to challenge myself further. I participated in a club and even applied and was chosen for and executive position in the club. I played sports on the new turf field and in the RPAC. I met new friends and got closer to friends I had already had. My favorite memory from this past year is either the weekly bubbles trips we would take as roommates on Thursdays, and then we would hang out and play games, or the time we all went to Scott for late night breakfast. I will never forget this past year because it actually started to feel like a normal college experience. I look forward what the next year holds and where I end up. I have made massive strides in life this past year and I expect the same will be true the same time next year. I will most likely be taking the MCAT and applying to medical schools.

G.O.A.L.S.

The G.O.A.L.S. of Honors and Scholars stand for Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. As a student at The Ohio State University, I plan to grow in all of these but I especially want to grow in Service Engagement and Academic Enrichment.

  • Academic Enrichment: I plan to grow academically while I am at The Ohio State University, not just doing what I need to get by, but thriving in the difficult classes tOSU has to offer. I will also grow and learn from my  mistakes when I do not thrive the way I want to. I will bounce back when I fail instead of giving up or thinking I am not good enough to succeed.
  • Leadership Development: I am a member of the executive board of a club I am a part of called MEDLIFE. I am the finance coordinator for the club so on top of handling the money, I also help plan the fundraising events in order to keep the club financially afloat.
  • Service Engagement: I plan to volunteer my time and energy to help make the world a better place by the time I graduate. This fits Global Awareness also, but I would like to go on a service trip abroad for at least a week to serve others and learn about their culture and way of life. One service opportunity that I found appealing was through FLOW (Friends of Lower Olentangy). It was a litter clean up along the Olentangy River with members from my MEDLIFE club for about two hours. I was very surprised by how much litter there was along the river, especially by the storm drain, and I am glad I was able to clean up the community to make it a better, nicer place to live.

Artifacts

This is the award I won for being the Valedictorian of my high school. It is important to me because it reminds me that my hard work pays off. I worked and studied hard to be the top of my class and by doing so I prepared myself well for the road up ahead. When I look at this award I do not think of the hard classes I did well in or the 4.1 unweighted GPA I ended high school with, instead I think about the classes I did not do well in or the assignments I did poorly in. I think of these bad times and not the good ones because it reminds me that it wasn’t always easy, that there were bumps in the road and I didn’t ace every class. It reminds me that even though I did poorly on an assignment, I can still turn it around and finish the top of my class or be successful so long as I never give up.

This is an image of me volunteering my time to redo the bathroom of my parish’s rectory. This image is important to me because it reminds me of the true joy that can be obtained when volunteering my time and energy to serve others. I am reminded of all the times I have volunteered and felt rewarded. For this service project, I helped take out the walls, floor, sink, toilet, and shower, and replace them all with newer ones so the bathroom was able to be used again. When I started this project the rectory was worn down and hadn’t been lived in for at least 10 years, and now the new priest at my parish has made the rectory into his permanent home. Just knowing that my hard work helped make a residence livable again, and it is being used daily is very rewarding. This picture also reminds me of a quote by Rabindranath Tagore which says, “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” This quote reinforces what I mentioned earlier, service can bring about true joy.

This image is the logo of the club I am a part of. I was recently elected to the executive board as the Finance Coordinator. As a member in a position of leadership in this club, I will learn to lead by example and be in charge of the financial situation of the entire club. I am excited for the work I will accomplish for the younger members of the group and the local community around Columbus. I also plan to travel to South America on a medical brigade sometime this summer and this artifact doubles as a reminder to write about my trip with a picture of it when/if I am able to go on the trip. This position will give me leadership experience as well as global awareness, and volunteering.
