Sophomore Year Reflection on the G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I think have done a good job of meeting, getting to know, and befriending people from cultures that are different than my own. In this way, I am getting a sense of what it is like in different parts of Ohio, the United States, and even the world. I would like to continue to get to know people within my classes because I think that everyone has something new they can offer, even if we may all share the same major. I have had the opportunity to have a roommate from South Korea which is really an interesting experience and has changed how I view the larger world. I will also broaden my world view through the completion of Italian as my foreign language requirement.

Original Inquiry: In Chemistry 1920H and Chemistry 2210H I have taken part in research projects. In 1920H we used perovskites to make solar cells and in 2210H we developed paper-based analytical devices for the detection of lead in drinking water. I am hoping to get into research of some sort either this summer or next semester. That will be a large way in which I can further work towards this goal. I will also be taking more advanced labs as part of my future coursework which will provide a further understanding into the research process.

Academic Enrichment: My Honors Contract consists of many challenging courses across multiple disciplines. Of the 128 total hours, 55 of them will consist of upper level courses. I believe that my planned coursework will prepare me well for taking the MCAT in Spring 2020 and progressing onto medical school after that. I chose the chemistry major because I find chemistry enjoyable and also because I felt as though the BS could adequately challenge me mathematically, since engineering was a field I considered when first thinking about college. I think that my GE courses reflect my interests in science and in medicine, as well as my eagerness to just learn something new. I think my intended coursework will push me towards excellence and really achieving my goals of medical school and beyond.

Leadership Development: I am a member of Health Points, Volunteering and Connections, as well as Casual Sports Club. I will also be a peer mentor for the Arts and Sciences Honors Survey class in Autumn 2019. I think the peer mentor program will be a good way for me to assist the incoming freshman and really give them someone to go to if they are unsure of the college process, as I know I was. I also view myself as a leader in class and on group projects by always leading by example and working my hardest.

Service Engagement: I am a member of Health Points club which volunteers time on the weekends to reach out and help in the Columbus community. We volunteer making cards for patients, at the Van Buren Shelter, with Habitat for Humanity, and the Buckeye Food Alliance. While home over breaks I also helped to renovate the house for the new priest at my home church by hanging drywall and redoing the bathroom. I plan to continue volunteering with Health Points while I am a student here at Ohio State because I think it is a good way to give back to the Columbus community after all it has given to me.
