Welcome to the Virtual Patient Site at The Ohio State University

The goal of the Virtual Patient Project is to create high fidelity virtual patients for use in medical education.  Virtual  Patient (VP) simulations allow for a unique approach to assessing essential clinical skills such as history taking and clinical decision making.  Virtual Patients are avatars representing standardized patients that students can interview and communicate with using natural language. Students can take a medical history and develop a differential diagnosis of the virtual patient, much as they would a standardized or actual patient. The distinguishing feature of our VP system is the artificial intelligence (AI) that controls the conversation between the student doctor and the virtual patient avatar. Our virtual patients are designed to interact with the interviewer using natural language conversations patterned after traditional doctor-patient interactions.
