Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Algae_Biofuel (Green Engineering Scholars semester project)

As a possible solution to the alternative energy crisis, algal biofuel is a convenient and easy-to-maintain, up-and-coming green energy source. Many other alternative energy sources have not flourished because of select disadvantages, but algae-based biofuel has the potential to surpass them in those fields. This research project highlights the progress and versatility of algal biofuel as an energy source.

Working on this research project introduced me to the process of using peer-reviewed articles and scholarly journals as the base of my presentation. This also broadened my view of green energy sources and the continuing progress of each. I found how algal biofuel stands in comparison to the other alternative energy sources through these scholarly articles and journals, both of which backed each figure with a recent study or statistic. Overall, this research project gave me insight on recent advances in alternative energy resources and experience working with credible, scholarly sources.

While I am organized and consistent with my work, I believe in being flexible and innovative in order to solve problems from different perspectives. I have a strong eye for design and have had experience working with media publication and design projects. I gained leadership experience through organizations in high school and have successfully planned and executed book drives and other community functions. I have experience working in a business environment, and I am familiar with the professional ethics and other related concepts. Within the industrial & systems engineering program at Ohio State, I am interested in a data analytics & optimization track. I am involved in the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) professional chapter at OSU and am currently looking for more opportunities to build my technical engineering skills.
