Abstract

Our group was interested in garnering a more comprehensive understanding of the different facets of the Vietnam War through different experiences. This project explores how one can better understand the Vietnam War by comparing individual experiences and perspectives through the following: comparative narratives of the Vietnam War, contrasting narratives of the Vietnam War, and an analysis of the United States government’s perspective/role in shaping the public’s understanding of the Vietnam War. In the ensuing pages, three different papers converse on this topic. Through the culmination of these three papers, one acquires a deeper understanding of the Vietnam War through the analysis of three different perspectives– an American soldier, a North Vietnamese soldier, and the United States government.

In the first paper, one learns through two personal narratives how two individuals on opposing sides of the war share similar experiences in the Vietnam War. In the penultimate paper, one learns the differences in how the authors of these two personal narratives interpret their experiences of the Vietnam War. Finally, in the third paper, one learns the United States government’s role in censoring different perspectives around the events of the Vietnam War.
