Wildcard Artifact

I am involved in a discussion community at the Battelle center on campus called SCOPE. This is a group of about 30 engineering students who discuss the humanitarian effects of engineering and most importantly, the impact of spaceflight and their companies. I find this interesting because it offers a different perspective on how different types of work actually affect the people involved and the planet. I recall in one discussion, an older woman came in to discuss her work and how she participated in the project. I cant remember now which project she was working on, but I thought it was cool as a young aspiring female engineering student, I loved seeing how people treated her accomplishments and what she said about how she was treated as a woman working on a high stakes project. She said she definitely had struggles not in her abilities but in her ability to get people to listen to her. I am nervous for the future but hopefully the world will be more accepting by the time I am in the workforce. This changed my perspective. I now want to have the same amount of success but I will do it quietly so that I do not get discouraged.

G.O.A.L.S. Update & Career Plan Reflection

Thus far in Scholars, I have made a good group of friends/backbone for my future in college. Scholars has allowed me to explore another major that is similar to mine but offers a different perspective. Going in to scholars, I wanted to maybe do a minor in something like architecture, but I have realized that I do not really want to continue with that plan. I have decided more in the business minor/masters route. I have taken more courses that I may not have been as interested in without scholars such as history of rock n roll. I have experiences Original Inquiry through creative classes such as Anthropology and History of Rock n Roll. These have given so many different perspectives on life and have really changed my views on how I should care about my life and how I live it. My scholars group of friends have pushed me to achieve greatness in the classroom and gym and I am smarter and stronger than I ever have been before. I did join a sorority to help make connections later in life and have a good service background and community to rely on. Scholars has allowed me to increase my service mind and given me more opportunities than I thought possible to help the Columbus community. I cannot wait to do a study abroad or travel after I graduate. Scholars is a good and helpful community of hard working and focused individuals and Jessica has been the most helpful and always been there if we need something. I believe my GOALS have changed from earlier this year and so have my post graduate ideas.

End of year reflection

This first year experience was the most fantastic thing that has ever happened to me. I do not believe that I would have had the same experiences anywhere else, I have met my best friends this semester and plan on taking on the rest of college with them. I have learned the hard way that is is more than okay to not be perfect. No one can get a 100% on everything and it doesn’t really matter if you do. All that matters is that you tried your best under the circumstances you were given. My goals of academic success have not changed, however my outlook on how I want to live my life have changed dramatically. I want to be happy, I don’t want to work too hard and be stressed every day of my life, that would be the best way to waste a good experience. I aspire to live a life full of great experiences and I want to travel and see how everyone lives and how different each culture is. Over spring break, I was invited to go to Puerto Rico with one of my good friends and that has been by far the most interesting trip I have taken. I crushed my goals of academic success, I honestly thought I would have done worse than I did. I am proud of my accomplishments.

The one things that I really learned how to do while at college, was do things on my own. I learned how to walk, eat, sleep, and study alone and on my own time. This was very hard to become comfortable with and at many points I was sad, but I am forever thankful that I have gotten through that because I am now  much stronger person. This summer I am going to help my dad build a back patio, and work at his engineering firm. These will help my skill set in both real world difficulties, and having job experience for the future and allowing me to be a more valuable asset to a company. Overall this year, I have changed the reality of my views on relationships as well. It is okay to be alone and one with yourself to find out who you are, what you want, and who you want to be.

Corona Virus really had to hit this year huh, what a tragic end to a fantastic first year.

My interest is in personal health and fitness, I’ve always been very active and it has been hard to keep that up in college. My goal is to become healthier, so by applying GOALS it correlates to my awareness of myself and who I want to be. I will be doing this along with Ania G, we will be beginning a workout plan to increase our strength and establishing a diet that would improve energy and work production for school. Working in our schedules, we would have a plan every week and every day of when we go to the gym and what we do that day. The first step is making the change to go to the gym and sticking to a meal plan. Of course my first goal is not weight loss, just fat loss. By feb 20 I hope to have increased my strength by 10% and lost 1 inch around my legs and mid section. I would also work in running and biking every week to supplement the workout routine. I plan to begin this right after my final on dec. 6.

Columbus Exploration pt. 2

For my Columbus experience, I chose coffee shops. I have gone to Zen Cha tea salon, One line coffee, Poindexter coffee, Kafe kerouac, and Roaming goat coffee. All of these shops were unique in their own way and had a whole different experience not only in the atmosphere, but in the coffee or tea itself. Poindexter was really cool and the people working were very nice. I could tell they wanted to work there and they had experience making coffee before. They had an interesting wall made out of pencils and their ceiling was dedicated to Ohio/Columbus memorabilia. It was awesome to see such an open and inviting place. This would be a good spot for working on assignments or coming to with your friends. Kafe Kerouac to be completely honest was very scary. I did not really feel comfortable with the vibe. However, they seemed very open to different people and had a few different sitting rooms. There were people working on homework, reading, talking and eating all around. I wish I went with someone else to share the moment with. Here I got a mocha and it was pretty good, however I think I would try something new because as I looked at the menu a but longer, I saw a few things that would have been better than a mocha. The last place I went was Roaming goat coffee. This place blew me away, not only was it homey, but the workers were nice, the people were respectful, and most of all it was so clean and comfortable. I sat here and talked to my mom on the phone for a while before catching the bus back to campus. I got a honey latte which I had never even thought about trying before. I got the iced version to contrast the mocha I had gotten earlier in the day. This was a very good drink and the man working seemed to know his coffee very well as he suggested this drink to me, I was being optimistic so I tried it and was not disappointed. I think my favorite experience from this project was Zen Cha and roaming goat. I would definitely go to these shops again. There are still many more I would love to go to, hopefully I can extend my experiences to my friends. I learned that Columbus has very different atmospheres for the same concept. These coffee shops were all different and the people in them were all very different such as ages, jobs, reasons for being there, but they all had coffee in common. I also liked that at each place they hand ground their coffee. At Starbucks it all happens in a big machine, not as cool. I want to continue exploring coffee shops here in Columbus, there are many I have yet to go to. I also want to explore the parks and art galleries, there is so much to see! To someone looking to do the same list, make sure the shops all have something different about them, It would not be nearly as fun to go to basically the same environment every time you walk into a coffee shop. I enjoyed the differences.

Part 1 of the Columbus to do list – aka get lost

In my first two Columbus tour experiences, I chose to do coffee and tea shops. I went to Zen Cha Tea Salon and tried bubble tea for the first time. I got a strawberry flavor and I have never been more satisfied with a choice in my life. It was so good and I will be going back soon. The second place I went was One Line Coffee. Here I got a classic soy Chai tea latte, I really enjoyed this drink. From these experiences, I learned about how different stores care about and cultivate their drinks and atmosphere. Zen Cha tea was very ornate and classy, inviting to say the least. One line coffee had their drink building station in the middle of the store and there were tables surrounding it. I thought this was a really cool idea to center the store around the coffee/tea. I hope to gain more information about the different coffee shops around the Short North and around Columbus. It would be really awesome to find a new place to study and hang out with my friends. There are a lot of small stores that would be more utilized. Starbucks and Dunkin’ are overrated compared to the self owned stores. The smaller stores care about their customers and satisfaction and that is really hard to find these days. I appreciated how much effort the workers put into making the drinks and knowing about the coffee and tea. I had a great experience at Zen Cha because the man working knew all about the flavors and what milks would go well with what flavors. I used to work at Starbucks and these people blew me away. Their knowledge was vast and I appreciated that. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and will be looking forward to the next visit to either of these shops and the next new one.

Journal 2

On September 27th, I met with my upperclassman mentor, Julia Workum. We met with Michaela, Cameron, and Jacob for our interview. We gathered at the KSA cafe in Knowlton hall at 4 pm on that Friday, for about an hour. So far my mentor had reached out to me via text and we talked about how I was doing on the first week of school and if I needed any advice. I did not need advice, but I did need reassurance that my upper level courses would not bear too much burden or that I would not be able to handle it. During this interview I learned about some of the scary stories of Studio class, the fact that most of these people are democratic, and that Cameron loves politics. I also learned that Julia is a Computer Science major. It was interesting to hear about her journey here as a student and the transition from Architecture into a CS major. I really liked the topics of stress management and not overloading yourself on classes. There really is no point in taking more than 18 credit hours a semester, even if you would graduate early, enjoy the experience. I also liked to hear about the different trips the scholars program has been on. It makes me really excited to either travel one day or do study abroad. I also was re-informed about the Ship program and how it would be helpful if I were to study abroad. I feel like I had similarities and differences with the people in the group. I love that we can all be different in our own way. I think I will be able to reach out to Julia in the future because our majors are similar and the work load is similar. She would be a good reference when it comes to professors or stress management, because I know she has been through it all. Looking forward, I also found that I am a little behind. I did not attend the career fair and I do not think that was a good idea. I found implicitly, that to do great things you have to be slightly ahead of the curve in all aspects. This meeting helped me solidify this mindset and I will go forward thinking of the possibilities, and not what is holding me back.

I personally liked welcome week, it was very fun and exciting and made moving in a great experience. I was an OWL, which meant moved in early so I could help all of the other people move in to our dorm. It was a great experience and allowed me to meet a lot of faces in the house. I went to the involvement fair, I have not looked through all of the clubs too hard though, that is something I should do soon. I really enjoyed convocation, it made me so happy to finally be a Buckeye. My classes are definitely not what I expected, however I love how they turned out to be. My Anthropology instructor is so into what she is teaching, learning is very fun in her class. My Calculus 3 class is just as hard as I expected it to be but the professor I am still adjusting to, she is very sweet though. My History of Rock n’ Roll class is awesome, I would not trade it for any other class, the lecture’s are 80 minutes of pure fun. I like my engineering class, but I wish there was a better way to get together with my team. These past two weeks have been emotional and hard, but so much fun. The transition for me is not that hard, because I grew up around Ohio State and I live very close. College life is so different, I have realized that everything I do relies on myself. No one can tell me what to do, and I am in complete control of what I do and when I do it. I have not walked more in my whole life as I have in the first two full weeks in college. I expected that people would be more open than they are, but I can see the discrepancy with my thought because everyone on my floor is in the same position I am. They are all adjusting, just like me. Somehow, college is almost everything I expected, except I thought it would be a lot harder than it really is. Working really hard in high school prepared me for knowing how to adjust to the work load. It is easier now to want to do all of the work and actually study because the resources are so much closer to my fingertips, and my motivation levels have been raised from that of a high school senior. The scholars program has helped bring our scholars group closer together because, we are all involved in the same program (on our dorm floor). Because of this, I have made a lot of new friends that I may not have been inclined to introduce myself to. The people are a lot nicer than they seemed on the first day. The scholars program is slightly different than what I thought it was going to be. I hope to learn more about what architecture does and by being around so many Arch majors, this has been a simple task. It is kind of like we are a big family, and that is making adjusting to college life a little easier.

About Me

Hi my name is Tessa Vetter! I am a Mechanical Engineering Major at OSU and I am from Hilliard, Ohio I love to read, draw, exercise, and hang out and do things with my friends! My goals are to get into the engineering college next fall and to keep on top of my studies so the stress of procrastination can be suppressed. I would love to get better at research and teaching myself new things and things that I do not understand. I want to get a minor in architecture or industrial design and a masters in either Mechanical Engineering or Business. I love to go hiking, rock climb, ride my bike, try sports I don’t play a lot, and challenge myself. I try to be the best person for myself and for the people around me. I consider my awareness to be one of my most important qualities. I am excited for this year and the experiences it will bring!
